“This is a great year for family cars,” said Jack Nerad, Kelly Blue Book’s executive market analyst. “There are some new entries in the marketplace that are terrific. Some of the old standbys are also terrific.”

At the top of the list, the Nissan Pathfinder.

“It’s new this year, and we were really taken by the Pathfinder,” said Nerad.

The largest category on the list is mid-size cars. There were four of these vehicles including, says Nerad, the all-new Ford Fusion.

“It’s a very, high-tech vehicle, and offers good looks on the outside and creature comforts on the inside,” says Nerad.

There was only one other American brand vehicle on the list, and it was an interesting choice. Nerad says they included the Chevy Suburban because big families need big vehicles.

“There are a lot of people, my family among them, that like a large vehicle like that, that has great hauling power, great passenger capacity,” says Nerad.

A little bigger and much more upscale, the Cadenza is Kia’s first attempt at keeping that customer who wants to move up from moving out of a Kia store and into somebody else’s entry level luxury sedan. So the first question is, how did they do?

After spending a day rolling around the hills outside of San Diego, the short verdict is not bad.

The Cadenza is a sharp looking car with the distinctive front grille and lamp treatment made a bit more distinctive. A sharp profile with well placed lines and an athletic looking stance give way to a fairly Audi-esque looking rear complete with oval dual exhaust ports.

High marks on fit and finish inside

Inside, the Cadenza gets high marks on fit and finish as well as materials. A 10-way power driver’s seat with heating and cooling and six-way passenger seat with just heating come with the car. The rear seats are also heated. Legroom is more than ample, especially in the rear when they put that extra two inches they stretched the platform.

The dash is well laid out, logical, and Kia’s UVO e-services system is among the best in the business. It takes connecting you to the car to a new level. It also comes with a 10-year free subscription and smartphone app. The fully loaded Cadenza I spent the day in also included a spectacular Infinity sound system and panoramic sunroof.

Under the hood and the drive feel

Under the hood the Cadenza gets Kia’s 3.3-liter 6-cylinder that cranks out 293 horses. Married up to Kia’s 6-speed automatic, it moved the sedan through the hills quite briskly. Paddle shifters are included with every model and give you a bit more of the sports sedan feel. Jumping onto the freeway is done without laboring the engine and passing on a two-lane road when safe is done with confidence that the engine has more to give if you need it.

The ride is generally solid and confident due to a great set of suspension components, although hitting a number of potholes can be a bit jarring. Steering is light, with minimal road feel, but the Cadenza never felt hinky on curves. Braking was solid and confident.

Pricing and gas costs

One of the great things about the Cadenza is that as I said you get bang for your buck, especially when it comes to safety. Distronic cruise control, blind spot warning, lane departure control and a number of other safety systems usually found in cars costing more are in the Cadenza.

Kia starts the Cadenza at $35,100 pretty well loaded. Add technology and luxury packages and you get to $41,100-plus destination. It is without a doubt a lot of car for the money. Fuel mileage figures: 19 city, 28 highway. In my day in the Kia with combined freeway and rural driving, we averaged 22 mpg. The Cadenza uses regular unleaded gas.

An overall impressive drive

The Cadenza is an impressive effort by Kia. In eight hours or so of driving it, I came away with almost the same thought I had when I drove its cousin the Hyundai Azera: a solid effort to create a better than you would expect car. It’s one that should keep the Kia buyer that wants more, in a Kia showroom. How will it do against the Maximas, Avalons, Taurus’ and Impalas of the automotive jungle? Ah…that my friends is the $41,100 question!

The institute has been running vehicles through a small vehicle frontal overlap crash test, simulating what happens when about 25 percent of the vehicle’s front hits an object.

The latest test crashed 13 small SUVs.

“The bad news is 11 of the 13 did pretty poorly,” said Insurance Institute Research Vice President Joe Nolan. “We only have one good performer, and one acceptable performer.”

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport received the “Acceptable” rating. The “Good” rating went to another vehicle made by a smaller Japanese car company.

“The Subaru Forester aced this test,” said Nolan. “It’s the first vehicle to do so in this new crash configuration. In every evaluation of the structural performance, the way the dummy interacts with the restraint system, and all of the injury measures, it scored perfect scores.”

That gives the Subaru Forester the designation of “Top Safety Pick+.” There are now 20 vehicles with that “plus” by their designation. Vehicles that score well in other crash tests, but not the new one, get a designation of “Top Safety Pick.”

Many of the small SUVs in this test remain top safety picks including the new Buick Encore and the totally redone Honda CRV and Ford Escape.

But, Nolan says all could be made safer, if strengthened for this new collision. The Ford Escape, for example, showed some issues that could lead to serious injuries.

“We recorded over three thousand pounds of force going through the driver’s left leg into his hip,” said Nolan. “That’s a poor rating for the protection of the knee, thigh, hip complex. That’s a potentially very debilitating injury.”

The Escape has set new sales records for Ford, which says it believes the vehicle is safe.

“Ford takes seriously every industry development related to vehicle crash performance,” read a statement from the company. “This is the first time IIHS has conducted this type of test on small SUVs. We are reviewing its findings in the context of our current design evaluations. The Escape was rated ‘Good’ for head/neck and chest dummy injury measures and ‘Acceptable’ for lower-leg/foot in this new test.”

The IIIHS says the purpose of the new test is to make vehicles safer. Institute officials say they believe carmakers will work to build vehicles that can pass the test. Nolan says that will save lives, and prevent injuries.

“Our analysis shows that about a quarter of all crashes that result in serious injury or fatality are what we call, small overlap frontal crashes.”

After his face was mutilated and eye gouged out by Rudy Eugene, Poppo was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital. On Tuesday several of the doctors responsible for his care talked about his progress.

“Mr. Poppo asked us to talk about him, to thank the community and the doctors for taking good care of him. He’s had a long year but he’s managed to cope quite well with what has happened to him,” said Dr. Wrood Kassira. “I’d say he’s content with where he is right now.”

While Poppo was not there in person, he did have a message which he delivered via a pre-recorded video.

“I thank the outpouring of people in the community,” said Poppo. “I just want to give thanks to the folks who helped me out. People who live in my predicament need to be helped out.”

A visibly heavier and happier Poppo expressed his thanks to everyone who supported him after the gruesome cannibal-like attack on the Macarthur Causeway last Memorial Day weekend. Eugene was walking across the MacArthur Causeway bridge and ran into Poppo, who was homeless at the time. Eugene had stripped off most of his clothes and began attacking Poppo and tearing his clothes off as well.

Poppo, who is blind, has undergone four surgeries to repair the damage done by Eugene who used his teeth to tear the man’s face apart.

“He had extensive trauma to his face. It was bad,” said Kassira. “We were able to close many of those wounds that were open, and cover the globe and do secondary reconstruction with grafting to other areas.”

“Some of the structural aspects of his nose continue to be missing but other than that he is doing quite well,” said Dr. Urmen Desai, a plastic surgeon.

And though there is much more work that can be done to make his appearance more normal, including a prosthetic nose and eye, Poppo has insisted he doesn’t want any more help.

That decision was difficult for some of the doctors treating him.

“It took me a few months to realize that, ‘Do we want to rebuild his nose and reconstruct his face for us or do we want to rebuild it for him?’. He’s not interested. He can’t see what he looks like and its not important to him what he looks like,” said Dr. Desai.

The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind is helping him cope with his loss of vision and become more independent. He’s learning to use a cane.

“At this point he is at least content, if not completely happy,” said his case manager Graciela Perez.

Poppo is now playing guitar, like he used to before his life on the streets. He’s also a huge Heat fan and listens to the games on the radio.

No family members have visited him but he speaks occasionally on the phone with his sister. Despite all the extra help his nurses and doctors at the Perdue Medical Center give him he does not like a fuss to be made over him.

“He wants world to know he’s not traumatized by this, that he’s happy and grateful for all of the staff at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Perdue facility, and that he’s a simple guy and he’s happy and grateful for being alive after such an incident,” said Dr. Desai.

For the most part Poppo’s medical treatment is complete. He is fully funded by Medicaid and can remain at the long term medical facility indefinitely. He also has $100,000 in a foundation fund thanks to the community.

In several Northwest Miami-Dade neighborhoods, streets and front lawns were completely under water which was knee-deep in some spots.

“I woke up this morning to a swamp,” said resident Miguel Castaneda.

Most residents grabbed rain boots or flip flops to get to their cars, and one resident even brought his work pants in a bag.

“I just grabbed some shorts because I figured I was gonna get wet so might as well just come in sandals and shorts and get dressed at work,” said Castaneda.

Maria Ayala put plastic bags on her feet to try and stay dry.

“I put a bag because it’s impossible walking around the water,” said Ayala.

Even pooches had no way around without getting their paws wet.

Several cars got stuck trying to drive through it and had to be towed. Pumps were brought in around 2 a.m. to try to drain the water from the lots.

Miami-Dade students rolled up their pants and puddled through the water to catch the bus.

“A lot of water, it’s all flooding. This happens a lot but I guess I’m used to it,” said a student Richard Gutierrez.

Parking lots in the area NW 82nd Avenue and NW 8th Street looked more like ponds with the water reaching to the top of tires on many of the cars while pumps worked to push out water that filled the parking lot of the Fontainebleau Gardens apartment complex.

With more storms in the forecast, residents are hoping the pumps drain faster than the rain falls,so their apartments stay dry.

“It’s gonna rain much, much more, so it’s guaranteed that today were gonna find some of the apartments to be flooded,” said resident Ramses Diaz.

“Need a boat, yacht, I don’t know. For leaving this place you need a yacht to get through, or a chopper.” said Roberto Barreras.

“Oh my God, it’s horrible. This is every year; when it rains, when it pours like that, it’s every year,” said Castaneda.

Other residents said every time it rains hard the flooding happens and they are fed up.

“I have called my commissioner’s office and I was told that everything was okay. No more flooding,” said a disgusted Arturo Aguilera as he stood by a flooded parking lot. “Just look at it.”|

Most of the heavy rainfall had moved offshore by the early morning hours. South Florida will dry out just a bit before another round of storms develops Tuesday afternoon.

Kaitlyn Hunt of Indian River County is charged with two felony counts of lewd and lascivious battery on a child 12 to 16 years old, according to CBS4’s partner The Miami Herald.

Hunt, who turned 18 on August 14, 2012, was said to have been dating the 14-year old, C.S., since November.

The girls began their fling just before Christmas when they had consensual sex in a bathroom at Sebastian River High School, according to the paper.

In Florida, the legal age of sexual consent is 18 and the state’s adopted “Romeo and Juliet” law keeps 18 year olds from being registered as sex offenders if they had consensual sex with classmates age 15 or older; but Hunt’s case doesn’t qualify because C.S. was underage, Indian River State Attorney Bruce Colton told the Herald.

When the girls’ basketball coach found out about the girls’ romance, she kicked Hunt off the team and informed her girlfriend’s parents about their same-sex relationship.

When Hunt got home that day, she was unaware of what would happen next.

On February 16^th, Indian River sheriff’s deputies showed up at Hunt’s home, handcuffed and arrested her, then took her to the sheriff’s office where they read Hunt her Miranda rights.

Hunt admitted to having a relationship with C.S. but didn’t think about the age being a problem because she “acted older,” said detective Jeremy Shepherd in a report.

“We’ve done everything we can to protect her. We’re doing our best,” Smith told the paper.

Hunt’s friends and family even set up a Facebook page for her support, called “Free Kate,” which now has more than 25,000 members.

Her friends also began an online petition on Monday at Change.org called “Stop the prosecution of an 18 year old girl in a same-sex relationship,” where more than 85,000 supporters have signed for charges against Hunt be dropped.

Within 24 hours, the nonpartisan campaign website collected 57,414 from all over the world, Change.org’s deputy campaign director, Jon Perri, told the Herald.

A month ago Colton’s office offered Hunt a plea deal, which she must accept by Friday.

If Hunt pleads guilty to third-degree child abuse, she could face up to five years in prison and not have to register as a sex offender, according to the Herald.

One key factor for the Rangers is the play — and health — of goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

Lundqvist was back on the ice Monday after his rough game on Sunday, in which he also appeared to injure his left shoulder.

He was no worse for wear during and following the hour-long practice ahead of Tuesday’s Game 3 in New York.

“Everybody is sore,” he said. “It’s the playoffs. You can’t just sit out if it’s hurting a little bit.”

Lundqvist said he “landed on the ice awkwardly and it hurt a little bit” in the third period of Boston’s 5-2 win Saturday in Game 2.

“It’s under control,” Lundqvist said.

CBS BOSTON: SEIDENBERG, REDDEN TRAVELING TO NY

Before Sunday, Lundqvist hadn’t allowed five goals in 151 consecutive games, dating to a 5-2 loss at Anaheim on March 9, 2011. He also had never yielded more than three goals in any of his 31 previous games against the Bruins, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Lundqvist gave up 12 total goals in the first five games of the first-round series versus the Capitals before shutting them out in Games 6 and 7. Boston has already registered eight goals against him.

“It’s disappointing to give up five goals, but positioning-wise and reading the plays for the most part was good,” Lundqvist said. “They made some good plays, too, and then there were some unlucky bounces and screens.

“I could probably find excuses for the goals, but it’s not going to help my game. I just have to try to be better and work even harder to see pucks.”

History is hardly on the Rangers’ side. New York is 2-19 in series it trailed 0-2, and no NHL team has won consecutive series after losing the first two games.

Game 4 will also be in New York on Thursday.

“We’ve won games here,” said Rangers coach John Tortorella. “That’s what we have to do. Not win two at home, but we need to win one game at home. And that’s our total focus.”

However, there were some notable exceptions. Franchise tagged defensive tackle Randy Starks is not with the team and may skip most of the team’s offseason work in hopes of getting a long term contract from the team.

Also missing from the workouts is the Dolphins’ number three overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, defensive end Dion Jordan. The team’s top draft pick can’t join the team yet because Oregon hasn’t ended its school year yet. Once Oregon is done, Jordan will join the team.

One other player who as recently as 24 hours ago wasn’t planning on attending the OTA’s was there Tuesday morning. Safety Reshad Jones was considering skipping the OTA’s to protest his contract situation, but the team promised it would address the situation and Jones was there Tuesday morning.

The Dolphins are full of intrigue this year thanks to the plethora of new faces on the team that have been acquired in the offseason. Plus, the team wants to see how quarterback Ryan Tannehill has developed and if left tackle Jonathan Martin is up for his new job.

According to ESPN’s James Walker, Martin’s “arms do look bigger, more defined. It’s clear he hit the weights this offseason.” That would be welcome news for Fins fans hoping he can fill the shoes of former left tackle Jake Long, who left via free agency this year.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Omar Kelly also tweeted that running back Daniel Thomas and tight end Charles Clay were practicing without restrictions, while guard Lance Louis was continuing to rehab his knee on the sidelines.

The other position to watch will be cornerback. The Fins hope Brent Grimes can step in immediately and improve the play from Sean Smith last season. Grimes is coming back from a torn Achilles that he suffered in the first game of the season.

If Grimes and Richard Marshall don’t make it back in time to start the season, Miami will be faced with an extremely young secondary to start out the year.

The shooting took place around 4 a.m. on May 30th, 2011. Police said Ray Herisse, 22, was driving erratically and tried to hit an officer with his car on a crowded Collins Avenue when they tried to pull him over.

Police said they thought he was armed and dangerous. Cops opened fire near 14th St. and Collins Ave., in a barrage of bullets captured on camera and posted on YouTube.

Records show police fired more than 115 rounds. Herisse was shot 16 times, according to the Medical Examiner’s report released earlier this month.

Four bystanders were also wounded in the shooting.

Initially, there were questions as to whether Herisse shot out of his vehicle at officers, which is what the governmental entities implied, according to Marwan Porter who is representing Herisse’s mother, Marceline Azor.

Police said they found a gun hidden in Herisse’s blue, bullet-ridden Hyundai. However, a Miami-Dade Police’s forensics lab found that Herisse did not test positive for gunpowder residue which means he did not fire the weapon.

Miami Beach Police Department stonewalled the family’s request for details of Herisse’s killing and fought the release of any information related to the killing for nearly two years, according to Porter. He was only able to obtain copies of the autopsy report and several other documents related to the shooting by filing a public records lawsuit on behalf of the family.

Herisse’s family claims when police opened fire, Herisse’s had stopped the car and was not a threat.

They also reportedly feel that given the number of people on the street at the time of the shooting, the 12 officers who fired their weapons acted recklessly. They point to the four bystanders who were shot.

Miami lawyer L. Elijah Stiers, who represents wounded bystander Carlson Saint Louis, said the gunshot residue test was important in knocking down any notion that Herisse fired the bullets that hit people in the crowd.

Police said the criminal probe into the shooting is ongoing.

Miami-Dade prosecutors are awaiting the final report from the lead homicide investigator before deciding whether the officers were justified in using lethal force.

Because the ground is so saturated and additional rain is expected throughout the day; a Flood watch has been issued through 10 pm tonight for coastal Miami-Dade county.

According to the National Weather Service, a few areas picked up nearly nine inches of rain since yesterday and today we could see an additional one to two inches of rain with isolated higher amounts.

The storm chance remains high today because there’s still plenty of moisture around and there’s an upper level low around Northeast Florida that will help keep the atmosphere juicy and unsettled.

There were already some heavy downpours in the morning and storms will likely develop again this afternoon into the evening hours with the heating of the day and all of the moisture in place.

Wednesday, we continue with a good chance of storms. Highs will soar to around 90 degrees Thursday and Friday with mostly afternoon storms.

A weak front sweeps through by the end of the week and some drier air may move in behind it just in time for the long holiday weekend. Temperatures will drop slightly with just a few spotty showers Saturday and Sunday.

South Florida had hoped to get one of the two Super Bowls, but after failing to win support to upgrade Sun Life Stadium; the chances of South Florida getting a Super Bowl are slim and none.

A few weeks ago, South Florida might have been waiting on pins and needles to see if it would be chosen to host one of the games. But after Speaker of the House Will Weatherford killed the stadium deal to upgrade Sun Life Stadium; Miami’s chances appear to be slim and none.

Despite the efforts of the Miami Dolphins, between Weatherford and a county still reeling from the boondoggle the Marlins pulled off to get its stadium, the Fins were fighting an uphill battle.

Super Bowl L is expected to be awarded to Santa Clara/San Francisco and Super Bowl LI is expected to be sent to Houston. South Florida was bidding on both games, but once the Sun Life Stadium renovations were denied, the bids fell behind what other cities were offering.

Santa Clara is constructing a brand new, $1 billion stadium to host the San Francisco 49ers and Super Bowl L will be the crown jewel for the new stadium. The 50th anniversary game is expected to be one of the biggest in league history.

The San Francisco area hasn’t hosted a Super Bowl since 1985 when Stanford Stadium was the home for the big game which matched up San Francisco, and ironically enough, the Miami Dolphins. Incidentally, San Francisco beat Miami that time as well.

If South Florida didn’t get Super Bowl L, the area was then going to be matched up against Houston for the rights to Super Bowl LI (51) the following year. However, Miami isn’t expected to win in a matchup against Houston either.

Miami’s biggest problem now is the league has threatened in the past not to hold another Super Bowl in South Florida without a stadium upgrade. Now that no upgrade is in the cards for the foreseeable future, if the NFL gives the area the big game, future arm twisting to help get stadiums built won’t carry the same amount of weight.

In addition, South Florida’s appeal as being a warm weather area doesn’t carry the weight it once did. The NFL has moved away from a desire to hold the game in warm weather climates and between that move and cities like San Diego and Miami not improving their stadiums, the Super Bowl rotation has fundamentally changed.

Miami has hosted 10 Super Bowls throughout the history of the big game. The last Super Bowl hosted by Miami was in 2010 and saw the New Orleans Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts.

But, with the NFL moving away from focusing on climate and instead looking at an overall bid and the quality of the stadium hosting the big game, South Florida may not see another Super Bowl for a long time.

That is of course unless weather makes a major impact on a game in a cold weather climate and things could change quickly if that happens.

Alex Sanabia outpitched Cole Hamels, leading Miami past the Philadelphia Phillies 5-1 on Monday night.

Justin Ruggiano and Nick Green each drove in two runs before a season-low crowd of 13,231 at Marlins Park.

“We’ve been waiting for those base hits and tonight we were fortunate enough to get a couple of them,” Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. “It was nice to see.”

Sanabia (3-6), who had lost each of his past five starts, allowed one run and seven hits over 6 1-3 innings to get his first win since April 16.

“It’s been a while, a few outings since I had one,” Sanabia said. “It felt great to get one.”

Miami had 11 hits and struck out 13 times on its way to scoring more than three runs for just the second time in 13 games. The Marlins have won two straight after dropping seven in a row and 10 of 11.

Miami improved to 4-5 against Philadelphia, including wins in the last three matchups. The Marlins are 9-27 against everyone else.

“They can handle different teams better than others,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “They’ve got a young team and they scrap and claw. They might not score a lot of runs, but they get their cuts in and against us they score. They score enough to beat us at times.”

Hamels (1-7) struck out 10 in six effective innings but has not won since April 28 at the New York Mets. Domonic Brown homered for the Phillies, who have had trouble scoring as well.

“We definitely have to score more runs to have a winning team,” Manuel said. “Hopefully we can keep staying at it and we will, but right now it’s tough. We take a step forward and two steps back.”

Sanabia and Hamels entered tied with Cubs right-hander Edwin Jackson for the NL lead in losses, but both pitched well.

Hamels, the 2008 World Series and NLCS MVP, gave up two runs and seven hits without a walk. The left-hander allowed three singles in the first inning and they resulted in a run when Marcell Ozuna drove in Adeiny Hechavarria for an early Marlins lead.

Brown homered to right in the second, his eighth of the season. But that was the only run for the Phillies.

“It’s definitely frustrating because I know we have the talent and the ability,” Brown said. “The numbers speak for themselves in the past. It’s May, it’s time to get going as a team.”

Hamels, who signed a $144 million, six-year contract last July, settled down after the first and fanned seven of 10 batters during one stretch. But the Phillies dropped to 1-9 when he starts after going 21-10 last season.

Hamels did not speak to reporters after the game.

“You know it’s tough on him, it’s got to be,” Brown said. “He probably won’t say it’s tough on him, but I would say it definitely is.”

Hamels gave up a leadoff single to Placido Polanco in the sixth and a two-out RBI double to Ruggiano that snapped an 0-for-18 slump and put the Marlins ahead 2-1.

“I haven’t been keeping track of what I’ve not been doing this past week. I just know it hasn’t been good,” Ruggiano said. “It snowballs on you. … It was nice to come out and get that monkey off my back and get some hits and some RBIs and win games.”

Chris Coghlan had two hits, including a triple, for the Marlins. He also made a diving catch in left field to take a hit away from Brown in the sixth with two runners on to end the inning.

“That’s the difference between today’s game and (Sunday’s) game: We would get a few breaks, and today they caught balls that we hit,” Manuel said. “It’s hard to explain.”

Philadelphia had a pair of runners on base with one out in the seventh, but Ryan Webb relieved Sanabia and retired pinch-hitter Laynce Nix and Jimmy Rollins to preserve the lead.

“We had a good chance when Nix pinch hit in the seventh, but we couldn’t tie the game up,” Manuel said. “That might have made all of the difference in the world.”

Chase Utley was caught stealing to end the eighth.

Miami tacked on three runs in the bottom half. Ruggiano had an RBI single off Phillippe Aumont to score Polanco. Two batters later, Green blooped a two-run single to shallow center that Ben Revere couldn’t come up with, making it 5-1.

Chad Qualls struck out two in a hitless ninth.

Cmdr. Deanna Fox-Williams and Officer Yewande Gibson claimed in the lawsuits that former chief Charles Hurley asked them for dates and then retaliated against them when they refused his advances over several years.

Hurley denied the claims but resigned in February when the school system took steps to demote him.

Miami-Dade schools investigators found Hurley behaved inappropriately but not that he harassed the women.

Terms of the settlement announced last week in open court were not disclosed in court documents.

Some surveys show more couples are now sleeping in separate beds.

So are they on to something? Do you get a better night’s sleep that way? Can you have a better relationship that way?

The idea of separate beds was television reality on the old “I Love Lucy” show but it’s also real life for some people.

Realtor Michelle Schocker found a home for sale with two separate master bedrooms and two master baths.

“This was designed for two people who want their own space and still be together,” said Schocker.

So why do some folks want to sleep separately?

There are a lot of reasons that can drive couples to separate bedrooms; everything from stealing covers, to different work shifts, to different temperature preferences, to wanting the TV on or off.

But sleep experts say there is evidence that people are actually programmed to want to sleep with someone else.

“I think psychologically we benefit from closeness with another human being at night,” said Dr. Wendy Troxel with the Rand Corporation. “When you think about sleep, it’s a really vulnerable state to be in.”

Sleep expert Dr. Daniel Buysse agrees.

“Probably with the course of our evolution, we were really designed to sleep together with other people,” said Dr. Buysse.

Buysse and Troxel are now studying how “in sync” couples are as they sleep.

Participants in their study wear devices that look like wristwatches, but they actually measure whether one person waking, wakes the other. The goal is to know if harmonious sleep patterns mean harmonious relationships.

Sometimes simple changes can get couple back into the same bed.

“Getting a larger bed makes a big difference,” said Dr. Troxel.

Other times, it’s more complex. While treatment can help with snoring or sleep apnea, sleeping in separate spaces sometimes works better for people with problems such as insomnia.

“I’ve seen a lot of patients who need to sleep apart just because that’s the only way they can get quality sleep,” said Dr. Buysse.

“It’s not a one size fits all approach,” said Dr. Troxel.

However, both experts say that if a couple does decide to sleep apart, it’s still important to spend some time together not only for intimacy, but also just for physical closeness.

Professional mixed martial arts cage fighter Fallon Fox’s biography is different from other female fighters in the MMA.

Fox was actually born a man.

“I am a post-operative transsexual female, which means I was born male. But, I had a transitional surgery to physically transform me from male to female and I feel great. I feel like the person I should’ve always been, and I’m happy that I’m here,” Fox told CBS4’s Summer Knowles.

Fox redefined the term “sit down interview” Monday as she took Knowles to the mat in what’s called a “triangle hold.”

Fox took it easy on Knowles, but in the world of mixed martial arts cage fighting she is not an easy opponent.

In fact, so far Fox has three amateur fights and two professional fights under her belt.

“I haven’t lost a fight yet,” Fox said.

Even though the Championship Fighting Alliance board has approved her to fight in the league, some people believe that Fox’s history gives the fighter an unfair advantage.

“This shouldn’t be controversial. But it is controversial because there aren’t that many people like me,” said Fox.

When asked if she physically feels different than when she was as a male she replied, “Oh, considerably. My muscle mass has decreased, my strength has decreased and my endurance has considerably decreased.”

University of Miami Dr. Christopher M. Estes said the science is seemingly on her side.

“In a male to female transgender person, their hormonal profile will become more like that of a biological female. Also other changes in their muscle mass, their bone mineral density which would occur also makes them more like a biological female,” said Dr. Estes.

Dr. Estes believes Fox belongs in the cage with other females, “As far as whether or not it’s fair for her to fight other women, I believe she should be in the ring with other woman.”

“I actually find myself at a disadvantage because I have low testosterone,” Fallon explained.

Either way, female fighters have agreed to get in the cage with her and Fox believes it’s just another evolution of sports.

“Just like blacks in sports, women in sports, gay people in sports, now its transsexuals in sports.”

In the written report, during past visits with the couple, the safety of the children in their home did not appear to be threatened and Bruno’s drinking was not an issue.

Bruno has been charged with aggravated man slaughter on a child under 18 after leaving her 11-month old son in his car seat last week outside their West Miami Dade home.

In the DCF reports reviewed by CBS4 News it states that social workers were aware of Bruno’s past for drugs and alcohol.  She was accused of drinking last summer when police arrested her husband for domestic violence.

At the time, because it was a domestic dispute between husband and wife, DCF wrote that her children were not considered in harm’s way.

In November, she was charged with DUI and child endangerment when she crashed into several walls before passing out drunk with her baby son in her lap. He was not injured in the accident.

Family members told DCF investigators that the incident of the DUI was “a one time thing” and “not normal behavior” for the mother.

Bruno, at the time, said she would undergo alcohol treatment and other court counseling, which never happened.  Her DUI/Child Endangerment case was still pending when her son died last week.

In court, Bruno’s attorney asked for her to have a mental evaluation, declaring that she is need of help, as she suffers from postpartum depression and had stopped taking her medication because she couldn’t afford them.

The judge denied the attorney’s request stating, “I’m going to deny your request to appoint any doctors because she has not been declared indigent,” said Circuit Judge Ruiz-Cohen.

After checking the surveillance cameras at  El Balcon de las Americas, their worst fears were confirmed. A thief had broken in early Saturday morning.

“I was angry and sad at the same time,” said the restaurant’s manager, Monica, who chose to only give her first name.

Surveillance cameras captured a man walking towards the front of the restaurant around 2:17 in the morning, wearing goggles and a hat. The video shows the man crawling on the floor — possibly to avoid the security sensors. Monica said he stole money from the register along with a laptop, iPad and iPod.

“He studied us, I’m sure,” she told CBS 4′s Carey Codd. “He’s done this before. He knew exactly what he was doing.”

Monica said the thief lingered in the restaurant for nearly 20 minutes, looking through every drawer and cabinet he could. Also, she said he took more than items and money with him.

“All my employees felt like he stole our security here,” she said. “This is our security here. We spend a lot of time together working together.”

As quickly and quietly as the burglar came in, the video shows the thief left with barely a trace. Monica is upset and wants the man caught.

“The people that work hard to earn what we have, they come and just take it away?” she asked. “Do they think that they earned this? No. They have to be stopped.”

According to Governor Scott, his strategy in deciding what to sign, and what to veto, was this, “One, is it going to help our families get more jobs? Two, will it help improve our education system in our state? And three, will it make government more efficient so we can keep the cost of living low in our state?”

It seems, with vetoes spread out well-across the state, that Scott spared no region. Also, the vetoes show that the governor was willing to delete projects backed by powerful lawmakers. The lawmakers who got zapped included Senate President Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, who supported the Gulf Coast State College project and also saw vetoes of other projects in northwest Florida.

Gaetz, who last week reacted angrily when the group Florida TaxWatch called for vetoes of some of the projects, issued a statement that was more philosophical about Scott’s decisions.

“While many will disagree with some of Governor Scott’s line item vetoes, that is his constitutional role as chief executive,” Gaetz said.

But Senate Minority Leader Chris Smith, D-Fort Lauderdale, criticized Scott for reversing legislative budget decisions.

“As a newcomer to the office and the process, the governor misses a critical understanding about the role of the Legislature in crafting a spending plan,” Smith said. “As he sits high and looks down low, he seems to be under the mistaken impression that all good ideas for job creation originate in the governor’s mansion.”

Rescia’s salt and pepper poodle mix, Pasta, was struck and killed by a hit and run driver Sunday who also hit the dog’s owner.

Rescia had just pulled into her drive on Northeast 18th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. She and her dog hopped out of the car.

Pasta the poodle stepped ever so slightly into the street. Rescia reached to pick up the dog, and they were both struck by a car speeding southbound on the avenue.

“I can’t believe he drove away. I can’t believe he drove away,” Rescia said Monday, tears coursing down her cheeks. “He stopped because he hit me, and then the moment I held the dog in my arms, picked him up, he just drove off.”

Pasta died in his owner’s arms. Rescia, who caught a more glancing blow from the car, was treated for scrapes and bruises at a nearby hospital.

“Pasta was my baby, he was happy, just a happy boy,” Rescia said. I saved his life 13 1/2 years ago and he knew it. He was a happy dog,” she said of the doe-eyed pup she rescued from the animal shelter. “It never should have happened. The guy was going way too fast.”

Fort Lauderdale Police believe the hit and run driver was behind the wheel of a newer model Mercury Montego, black with four doors.

“I want him to turn himself in,” Rescia said. “Even a simple ‘I’m sorry, I’m so sorry’ would be something.”

Rescia, a dog groomer by trade is a lifetime dog lover. A small sign by her front door reads, “No home is complete without the pitter-patter of little doggie feet.”

Rescia’s bruises and abrasions from her near death experience will heal. She says her heart, broken by the loss of her beloved Pasta, will not.

Catalina Bruno, charged with aggravated manslaughter on a child under 18, was held without bond after appearing before a judge Saturday morning.

During a bond review hearing in front of a different judge on Monday, lawyers waived her need to appear before the judge. Her attorney also asked the judge for help.

“She is someone who needs help. Unfortunately she’s been painted as a monster, but really, she’s very sick and she is a good mother,” said defense attorney Lonnie Richardson.

Bruno’s attorneys are worried about her mental health. They say she suffers from post-partum depression after giving birth last year.

“I would ask this court, not necessarily for bond, but I would ask this court for now, is to have her evaluated at Jackson,” said Richardson told Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Samantha Ruiz-Cohen.

Bruno’s attorneys said she could no longer afford the medication to treat her depression and asked for the state to pay for an evaluation.

“I’m going to deny your request to appoint any doctors because she has not been declared indigent,” said Circuit Judge Ruiz-Cohen.

In an interview with CBS4’s Maggie Newland Bruno’s ex-husband, Anand Lakhram, said he “never saw this coming.” Lakhram also said that he and Bruno have two kids together, a 10 year-old boy and a nearly five year-old girl.

“She was a good mother and that’s all I can say. She’s always taken care of my children. I’ve seen the little boy and it’s a great tragedy my heart goes out to the family,” he told Newland.

Lakhram came by the house Monday afternoon with his kids to pick up their things. He said the children are having a difficult time dealing with the loss of their baby brother. He also said Bruno had suffered from depression for years. “She was depressed. She was depressed for a long time.”

Miami-Dade police arrested Bruno at her home at 1071 SW 150 place in West Miami-Dade last Thursday afternoon.

Bruno, according to Miami-Dade County Police, put her 11 month old son in a car seat and drove home. Upon arriving home, she got out of the car, left the infant inside the vehicle and went into the house.

Police said Bruno was inside for “an undetermined amount of time,” but that the father, Amos Osceola, would later ask where the child was.

At that point, Bruno said she had not taken the infant out of the car and that he was still in the car.

Police said Osceola ran to the car and found the baby unresponsive and still in the car seat. Osceola pulled the child out of the car and ran him to a nearby fire station.

When police questioned Bruno about what happened, she reportedly confessed to leaving her son in the car.

Bruno’s arrest came months after a previous arrest on a child neglect charge. She was on pre-trial release when her son died.

Bruno’s attorney said their focus at this time isn’t on getting her out of jail, but rather getting her treatment.

“She’s very depressed. I went to visit her in jail. She’s not stable. She’s in really bad shape,” said Richardson.

Bruno’s arraignment is scheduled for June 7th.

Doctor Joseph Smith, who came in third place for the mayoral vote, paid almost $500 fee to see every vote.

When CBS4’s David Sutta commented to Smith about reverting to this old school way of counting votes, he responded, “Correct. And the old school is usually the right way.”

While some could argue this is a case of a candidate being a sore loser, Dr. Smith and fellow North Miami mayoral opponent Jean Marcellus said it’s actually a conspiracy.

“The math does not match,” said Marcellus.

Marcellus believes that 746 absentee ballots disappeared between early voting and election day.

“I’m in this fight as a matter of principal.  Until we find exactly where this discrepancy comes from we won’t stop,” Marcellus said.

The elections office has maintained that it was simply an error on behalf of the clerk. A disc handed that was handed to campaigns was apparently mislabeled. According to the elections department, all the votes have been accounted for.

When CBS4’s Sutta asked Smith if he thinks he will have any resolution from today’s recount, Smith answered, “We may not but we want to make a statement.  We want to make sure that what they say is what it is.  And we have a strong suspicion that what they say is not what it is.”

While the manual recount of the 6,983 votes is par for the North Miami election, the campaign, too, was less than ordinary.

The city’s elections brought us Anna Pierre, a voodoo cursed mayoral candidate, endorsed by Jesus; another candidate who handed out bars of soap to “clean up city hall;” and Jean Marcellus, who was punched in the face because a voter didn’t like him.

Last Friday, some of the city’s voters were fired up, protesting against the results.

Whether or not this manual recount will finally bring this election to an end remains in question. Either way, there is still a run-off election between the top two candidates in several races set to be held on June 4^th.

Marco Villalobos of Doral said he needs to watch his budget closely. That’s why he tries to keep his homeowner’s insurance bill down to about $2,000 a year. Despite his need to save money, he said he hasn’t heard a thing about Citizens bare bones coverage call HO8 which could potentially slash his bill by more than 50 percent.

“It sounds good but I don’t remember hearing about it,” said Villalobos.

If you look at Citizens’ website, you won’t find much on it either. Michael Peltier with Citizens Property said he’s not surprised.

“As a residual insurance carrier, Citizens does little marketing of any of our products. The H08 is no different. We rely on our agents to provide their customers with the information they need to make informed decisions on their insurance,” said Peltier.

Peltier said since the plan was made available, of the 122,000 Citizens customers who would fit the criteria for the cheaper coverage, only 47 such policies have been written.

In order to qualify, the home must be $200,000 or less in value and at least 51 years old. The HO8 policy has restrictions including caps on theft claims and replacement cost payments. It also offers very limited coverage. Peltier said these policies were never intended to replace traditional policies.

“In the private market, the HO8 policy is a “niche policy” that is marketed to older homes in which the replacement cost is much higher than the market value,” said Peltier. “It was never meant to replace the traditional homeowners (HO3) policy. Numerous websites described its plusses and minuses.”

The HO8 policies were mandated by the state so property owners would have access to a bottom line policy in case they couldn’t afford anything else. Some state lawmakers are very critical of Citizens for not doing more to publicize these rock bottom policies. State Rep. Frank Artiles has been a long time critic of how Citizens does business.

“Our offices are getting bombarded by insurance calls that my insurance is astronomical. It’s becoming cost prohibitive to live in South Florida,” said Artiles.

Villalobos said he worries that Citizens intentionally withheld the information about the cheaper policies because they are not good for the agency’s bottom line.

“I assume it’s for their best and not for the best of their customers,” said Villalobos.

Tumblr is Yahoo’s most expensive acquisition since the Sunnyvale, Calif., company bought online search engine Overture a decade ago for $1.3 billion in cash and stock.

It’s also going to be an all cash deal thanks to some of the remaining stash from Yahoo!’s sale of Chinese Internet company Alibaba Holdings Group last year which netted the company roughly $7.6 billion. The deal will wipe out one-fifth of the $5.4 billion in cash Yahoo had in its accounts at the end of March.

While hailing Tumblr as fount of creativity that attracts 300 million visitors per month, Yahoo pledged “not to screw it up.” David Karp, a high school dropout who started Tumblr six years ago, will remain in control of the service in an effort to retain the same “irreverence, wit and commitment to empower creators,” Yahoo said.

Karp, 26, may now have a managerial mentor in Mayer, 37. Tumblr, which will remain based in New York, has about 175 employees while Yahoo has 11,300 workers.

Mayer, who worked closely with Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, had high praise for Karp in a statement. She described him “as one of the most perceptive, capable entrepreneurs I’ve ever worked with.”

In his statement, Karp predicted Yahoo would help Tumblr grow even faster as he strives “to make the Internet the ultimate creative canvas. “

Tumblr now figures to play a pivotal role in Mayer’s attempt to reshape Yahoo. To take on the challenge, Mayer ended a highly successful 13-year career at Google, which she helped surpass Yahoo as the Internet’s most influential company. Since coming to Yahoo, Mayer has concentrated on improving employee morale, redesigning services and bringing in more engineering talent through a series of small acquisitions that have collectively cost less than $50 million.

Her efforts have been well-received on Wall Street so far, although most of the 69 percent surge in Yahoo’s stock price under Mayer’s leadership has been driven by the rising value of Yahoo’s remaining 24 percent in Alibaba. When Alibaba goes public within the next few years, analysts have estimated Yahoo could collect another $10 billion to $20 billion by selling the rest of its Alibaba stock.

If this deal pays off the way Mayer envisions, Tumblr could help Yahoo finally get its stock price to $33. That would be a major coup because many investors soured on Yahoo after a previous regime led by co-founder Jerry Yang squandered an opportunity five years ago to sell the entire company to Microsoft for $33 per share. The stock spent more than four years trading below $20 before the recent surge that lifted the price to $26.52 through last week.

The deal could backfire though if Yahoo’s effort to make more money alienate a Tumblr user base that so far has been subjected to hardly any advertising during the service’s six-year history.

“Yahoo has to manage this acquisition in a way that keeps Tumblr’s user base while trying to add advertising, which historically tends to turn off a lot of people,” said Forrester Research analyst Zachary Reiss-Davis.

Yahoo said it will work with Tumblr to create ads that “are seamless and enhance the user experience.”

Mayer is betting that Tumblr will provide Yahoo with a captivating hook to reel in more traffic and advertisers on smartphones and tablet computers. That rapidly growing market is expected to become even more important during the next decade as people increasingly consume digital content on mobile devices instead of laptop and desktop machines.

Dwayne Bryce said that his nephew, Jeffrey Bryce Jr., is in critical but stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital and suffered from 3rd degree burns on his back, neck, ear and part of his face.

“He was with Miami Gardens Police for seven years and he just left the department a few months ago,” said Bryce. “Now he is incubated inside the burn unit of the hospital and will be heavily medicated for the next few days.”

The accident happened in the westbound lanes just west of University Drive in Miramar on Saturday around 2:45 a.m.

Bryce Jr., of Miramar, had stopped his 2004 Hyundai in the left lane. It was rear ended by a Nissan driven by 26-year old Evan Soto, according to the FHP.

FHP Sergeant, Mark Wysocky, said the impact was so severe, it caused the Hyundai to catch on fire and explode. Bryce, who was critically injured, was pulled from the car by Soto and another driver. The passenger, Nathalie Vasquez, Bryce Jr.’s fiancé from Miramar, died on scene.

“It’s not known why the vehicle had stopped on the highway,” said Wysocky Soto who was reportedly treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released.

Doctors will be watching Bryce Jr. closely because of how susceptible he is to infections in this stage, according to Bryce.

“My nephew is conscious with his eyes open, he does not know his fiancé has passed away,” said his uncle.

Bryce Jr.’s mother said that neither she nor her son wanted to say anything right now.

Meanwhile, Bryce’s loved ones were at his side inside the burn unit at the Ryder Trauma Center of Jackson Memorial Hospital on Monday.

So they weren’t about to ease up when they had a big lead of their own on Sunday.

Boston went ahead by two goals in the first minute of the third period, added another 12 minutes later and beat the New York Rangers 5-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals.

Still, the Blueshirts aren’t about to go down without a fight as the series heads to New York.

“We don’t want to lose two games here, no one does,” said Rangers coach John Tortorella. “But there’s no give in this team. There will be no give in this team. We need to go win a game. Not look anywhere else, just try to win our first home game this series.”

Just six days earlier, the Bruins became the first team to win a Game 7 after trailing by three goals in the third period. They started their comeback with less than 11 minutes left and extended their season with a 5-4 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“Guys are really trying to stay focused on doing their job in the third period,” Brad Marchand said. “We know how important they are, especially after what we went through being down by a few goals. We know that it’s possible for any team to come back from any score.”

Marchand made it 4-2 with just 26 seconds gone in the third period, Milan Lucic scored at 12:39 and the Bruins worked hard the rest of the way.

“We talked about it before we went out there in the third period, and we just had to make sure that we played to win,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “I don’t like our team when we play on our heels and we’re just trying to protect a one-goal lead. We’ve got to extend the lead and extend it even more before we even think about protecting it.”

Game 3 is Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers never led Sunday, although they tied the game quickly after each of the Bruins’ first two goals.

The second period may have been New York’s best of the series even though Johnny Boychuk’s tie-breaking goal on a 40-foot shot at 12:08 of the period got past goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who was screened by several players.

“We played a really good second,” New York’s Dan Girardi said. “The first shift of the third killed us.”

That’s when Marchand made it 4-2 with a goal similar to the one that gave the Bruins a 3-2 overtime win in the opener.

Patrice Bergeron carried the puck in deep along the right side and passed across the crease to Marchand, who had beaten Girardi and tipped it in.

“I have to be ready to defend that pass there,” Girardi said. “They didn’t have much room, but, obviously, I have to be either on the strong side blocking that or on Marchand’s stick. That really put us behind the eight-ball.”

With a two-goal lead, the Bruins remained aggressive but still clogged the middle in front of goalie Tuukka Rask when the Rangers attacked.

“We felt really good going into the third, and to have that type of goal go in — it’s just two-on-two — it hurts you,” Tortorella said. “We couldn’t generate anything, and then they’re just going to fill the middle and they’re just going to jam you.”

Boston never trailed as rookie Torey Krug scored the first goal at 5:28 of the first period before Rangers captain Ryan Callahan tied it less than three minutes later. Gregory Campbell made it 2-1 at 2:24 of the second period, and New York pulled even again 56 seconds later on Rick Nash’s goal, his first of the playoffs after he led the Rangers with 21 in the regular season.

“We didn’t play our best,” Marchand said. “I think, especially in the second period, they took it to us, but we were able to bounce back. It’s definitely a very even series.”

Not when it comes to goaltending.

Lundqvist allowed more than five goals for the first time in 152 games, including the postseason, and stopped 27 shots.

“I thought I was in position, but (there were) a couple screens and when you give up five goals you can’t be satisfied,” he said.

There’s also the matter of his left shoulder that was hit by Daniel Paille’s third-period shot. Lundqvist rubbed it after the game and said, “We’ll take a look at it.”

Rask saved 35 of 37 shots.

Still, Lundqvist won the Vezina Trophy last year and is a finalist for it this year.

“I know that I can’t let in any lead goals most nights because he is who he is,” Rask said, “but, then again it’s a team game and we’re more focused on the Rangers than any individual.”

These are the Rangers who also lost the first two games of their opening series on the road, then won the next two at home. They lost Game 5 in Washington but won the last two games behind shutouts by Lundqvist.

“We’ve done it before,” he said, “but I think we are playing a better team now so it’s going to be tough to do it.”

Ahead or behind, home or away, the Bruins plan to play with the same determination the entire game.

“You can’t take anything for granted,” Boychuk said. “It’s playoffs. Anything can happen, and sometimes a team can play better in front of their hometown.”

NOTES: The last time Lundqvist allowed more than four goals was March 9, 2011, in a 5-2 loss to Anaheim. In the next 151 games he allowed four goals just 13 times. … The Bruins played their second straight game without injured veteran defensemen Andrew Ference, Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden … A defenseman got a goal or an assist on each of Boston’s goals. … The margin of victory was more than two for just the second time in 26 games between the teams. … In their nine playoff games, the Rangers have scored on two of 35 power plays. After their performance in Game 3, it is clear the defending Stanley Cup champions still need plenty of work.

The Kings went through a short workout at their training complex Sunday after sleeping in their own beds following a 2-1 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.

Such easy travel usually isn’t possible in the spread-out Western Conference, but Game 4 isn’t until Tuesday night at the Shark Tank.

“We were home at pretty much the same time as we would coming from Staples on a regular night,” center Anze Kopitar said. “It’s a 50-minute flight, so it’s pretty quick. I think it’s good for us.”

Los Angeles’ 2-1 loss in Game 3 ended on a power-play goal after two penalty calls that angered and confused the Kings for several reasons. Yet captain Dustin Brown acknowledged the Kings have plenty of concerns beyond the officiating.

Los Angeles leads the series 2-1, but only after getting a 35-save shutout from Jonathan Quick in Game 1 and stealing Game 2 with two late power-play goals.

“We’ve got to score more than one goal,” Brown said. “I mean, Quickie is a great goalie, but at the end of the day, we need to score more than one goal for him. We haven’t done that. I think we’ve only scored one goal three times out of four away games.”

Indeed, the Kings have scored six goals in their four road playoff games this spring, half of them in a 3-2 overtime win at St. Louis. The other three road playoff games all have been 2-1 losses — and before that, Los Angeles dropped six straight road games to close the regular season, scoring nine goals in that stretch.

Robyn Regehr was whistled for hooking on a seemingly garden-variety stick play with 41.7 seconds left in regulation in Game 3, and Trevor Lewis followed him into the box with 4.5 seconds left on a goaltender interference call that had the Kings steaming. They claimed Lewis was pushed into Antti Niemi, and questioned why such a dramatic call would be made so late in a game.

The Kings killed off the 5-on-3 disadvantage, but gave up Logan Couture’s power-play game-winner. Quick, who shut out the Sharks from the opening minutes until the final buzzer, got a game misconduct for berating the officials who made the decisive call.

“Not happy, but we can’t do anything about it,” Kopitar said. “Again, it’s the position that we put ourselves into that is mind-boggling. It’s not the way we want to play and be in that situation. We came close to killing it off, but we’ve said it all along, you can’t give them too many opportunities, because they will score, and they did.”

The Kings have demonstrated they know how to regroup after a playoff loss. After dropping the first two games of the postseason in St. Louis, they responded with six straight victories.

The Sharks also present a challenge similar to the Blues in their desire to attack Quick with a high volume of shots. St. Louis outshot Los Angeles in four of the six games, and the Kings have been soundly outshot by San Jose in the current series — but with Quick in top form, the numbers haven’t beaten Los Angeles.

San Jose also has revived its dominant power play, which produced both of its goals in Game 3 after the Kings shut out the Sharks in the first two games at Staples Center.

“Especially when the Conn Smythe winner (is) on the defending champion team, I’m going to assume if I was coaching against them, that I’m going to say, `Shoot lots, and get as much traffic as you can,”‘ Sutter said. “So I think San Jose has that mindset, as St. Louis did last series. You’re trying to get your team to shoot more, and you’re trying to get players to go to the net more.”

Toews was named captain of the Blackhawks in 2008 when he was just 20-years-old, making him the third-youngest captain in NHL history at the time. While his leadership on the ice is undisputed, his role off the ice with various children’s charitable causes makes him an undeniable role model to fans. In his spare time, Toews volunteers to grant wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation and visits with patients at the local children’s hospital and Chicago’s Misericordia. Last fall, he returned home to join the Winnipeg Patrolmen Hockey Club and other NHL players for the “Goals for Dreams Hockey Challenge,” which helped raise $80,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Dream Factory, a charity that grants dreams for critically and chronically ill children.

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings got much younger this year, rebuilding with rookies and prospects pushed onto the ice.

For much of the lockout-delayed season, it didn’t look good for them.

The storied franchise used to chase Stanley Cup titles with key players in their late 30s and 40s such as Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Chelios, Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull and Larry Murphy.

Not anymore.

As the Chicago Blackhawks are now finding out, the Red Wings are much better than they were during the regular season thanks to an improved cast of inexperienced players.

“We’ve had great growth from within, I think the most since I’ve been in the National Hockey League for sure,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said Sunday. “That may be because we have a different type of team. We got a whole bunch of kids, so we have a chance for growth.”

Red Wings rookie Brendan Smith scored the winning goal Saturday in Detroit’s 4-1 win at Chicago that tied the series 1-1. The top-seeded Blackhawks won the opener by the same 4-1 score.

“We knew they were going to come back and play much better than they did in Game 1,” Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. “Obviously, we didn’t quite match the effort.”

When the puck drops Monday night in Detroit for Game 3, Toews hopes his team is ready to bounce back.

“There’s no time to waste in this series,” Toews said. “We know going into their building it’s even more difficult.”

It will be even more challenging for Chicago if Toews can’t produce as he did in the 48-game regular season.

Toews had 23 goals, tying Patrick Kane for the team lead and trailing just four players in the league. However, he is struggling to score for a third straight postseason.

Toews is in an eight-game playoff slump that dates to last year. He has just three goals combined in three postseasons since scoring seven goals to help Chicago win the Cup in 2010. He had seven goals the previous postseason — his first — when Detroit eliminated the Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals.

Henrik Zetterberg had a lot to do with holding Toews without a point in Game 2, an accomplishment that didn’t surprise Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard.

“Most nights, he’s the best player on the ice,” Howard said. “No different from (Saturday), the way he was all over Toews the whole game, shutting him down. We’re going to need that for the whole series.”

The Red Wings would also benefit if their inexperienced players figure out a way to avoid fading into the background.

Before Smith’s go-ahead goal on Saturday, first-year player Damien Brunner and rookie Gustav Nyquist also scored winning goals this postseason — in overtime against Anaheim. Teammate Joakim Andersson ranks among rookie scoring leaders.

The 27-year-old Brunner, too old to be a candidate for the Calder Trophy given to the rookie of the year, has followed up a 26-point regular season with four goals in the playoffs to match Johan Franzen for the team lead. He also has three assists.

Calder finalist Brandon Saad has only one assist in seven postseason games for the Blackhawks. The 20-year-old forward had 27 points during the regular season.

Brunner has insisted it doesn’t bother him to be out of the running for the Calder, and sounded even more thankful on Sunday that he waited to make the jump from the Swiss League.

The 5-foot-11, 184-pound forward was banged around on the ice quite a bit and had growing pains off it, dealing with a lot of travel after his longest trip last year was a 2½-hour bus ride.

“You kind of think it’s not that big of a deal when you come over, but after a couple trips and the hours you lose, especially when you come back home, it’s tough,” Brunner said. “It’s really tough.”

While Babcock’s job behind the bench was tougher this year than it had been the past seven seasons with veteran-filled rosters, he relished the opportunity to lead the young Red Wings.

“It’s the most fun I’ve had coaching in a couple years, by far, just because we have a real enthusiastic group,” Babcock said. “At the start of the year, we weren’t a good team. We all understood that, but we buckled down and we got better. It’s been fun for us. If you would have asked me before the playoffs, I would’ve told you the same thing. Then suddenly you have a little success in the playoffs — and it’s more fun.”

After Game 2, Henrik might be in for some tossing and turning after experiencing some serious déjà vu.

Early in the third period, with the Bruins leading 3-2, Patrice Bergeron won the opening faceoff and shortly afterwards carried the puck on a 2-on-2 rush up the ice. With Marchand driving to the net, Bergeron carried the puck to the corner of the rink, drawing Michael Del Zotto with him before sending a pass to the front of the crease. Marchand, able to fight through Dan Girardi, got his tape on the puck and redirected it just under Lundqvist’s right pad.

The goal made the score 4-2 in favor of the Bruins with 19:34 left in the game, so it wasn’t quite the back-breaker that Thursday’s overtime goal was. Yet the goal appeared to crush New York’s hopes of clawing back, a thought completely eliminated 12 minutes later when Milan Lucic scored to give the Bruins a 5-2 lead. The rout was on, and while Lundqvist was a bit cryptic with his postgame comments, he seemed to confirm suspicions that the Rangers were taken off their game in the third period.

“We gave it to them,” Lundqvist said after the game, before repeating himself. “We gave it to them. I thought we played great, [but] I don’t think they had to work really hard to get a couple goals there. We just made it really tough on ourselves, so we have to correct a few things and go home and turn this around. It doesn’t matter the score — it’s a loss. Overtime or 5-2, doesn’t matter.”

The bottom line is that the final score doesn’t matter, but in a series predicated on defense and goaltending, the dynamic certainly shifts now. After an imperfect but respectable performance by Lundqvist in Game 1 (45 saves on 48 shots), the safe bet was for a monster performance in Game 2. Instead, he allowed five goals, the first time he’s done that in any game since March 9, 2011, and the first time he’s done it in a postseason game since April 26, 2009. His save percentage in the series now sits at .900, his goals-against average at 3.54. His regular-season numbers? A .926 save percentage and 2.05 GAA.

Despite the outcome, the Rangers won’t panic. Head coach John Tortorella said flatly, “I’m not evaluating our goaltending. I don’t need to evaluate Henrik. We know what Henrik is.”

And, really, the five goals don’t all fall on Lundqvist’s shoulders. Dan Girardi screened the goalie on Torey Krug’s shot, which opened the game’s scoring, and Girardi later kicked a Krug shot right to Gregory Campbell in front of the net for the second Bruins’ goal. Girardi again screened Lundqvist on Johnny Boychuk’s goal, the eventual game-winner, and he failed to break up the pass from Bergeron to Marchand early in the third. The icing on the cake for Girardi came when he made a decent play to drop to the ice to break up a pass, but ended up sliding out of the way and allowing Lucic to easily score the fifth goal. If anyone had a nightmare game, it was most certainly No. 5 in white, not No. 30.

Lundqvist also looked to be suffering through some sort of pain in the third period, and he later confirmed he had some sort of shoulder injury that would require a look from the team’s medical staff.

Excuses beyond his control were there for Lundqvist, and he certainly cashed in on the opportunity to make them, but he is not supposed to be just any goalie. The reigning Vezina winner and almost-unanimous best goalie in the sport should be able to rise to the challenge of playoff hockey and come through with saves no matter the circumstance — maybe not all of them, but at least one of them. That’s what it takes to get through the postseason and win a Cup for a team dependent on defense, and the last two Conn Smythe winners are proof of that.

For the last two games in Boston, dozens of reporters, microphones and cameras crowded around Lundqvist’s locker stall, because he is the superstar, and he is the “king.” His hat with the number 30 inside a crown, which he wore after the 5-2 loss, was there to remind everyone of that.

But one more game from Lundqvist where the king plays like just another goalie, and this series is going to be a lot shorter than most everyone anticipated.

Johnson was taken into custody Monday morning during a court appearance after a judge decided he had violated his probation that stemmed from a domestic violence incident with his then-wife Evelyn Lozada in 2012.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office issued an arrest warrant for the former football star last week after he allegedly failed to report to his probation officer three months in a row, as well as failure to enroll in a Batterers Intervention Program (B.I.P.)

“As far as the warrant, it caught me off guard,” Johnson told the court Monday. “I was under the impression after seeing you (the judge) the last time that all I had to do was my classes based off the wording…That’s what I did. I didn’t do any of this on purpose. I did everything I was supposed to do, and that’s all.”

Johnson had been on probation since September 2012 after he cut a deal with prosecutors over charges he head-butted Lozada during an argument last August. Lozada reportedly found a receipt for a box of condoms and confronted Johnson about it.

Under terms of the original plea deal, Johnson pled no contest and was ordered to serve one year of probation, complete batters’ intervention counseling and pay medical restitution.

Johnson posted a $1,000 bail and was released from jail a little after 4:30 p.m.

His case has another hearing scheduled for June 3.

Tuesday, Poppo’s medical team at Jackson Memorial Hospital, will update the public on how he is one year after Eugene attacked him and chewed off large portions his face.

Eugene was walking across the MacArthur Causeway bridge and ran into Poppo, who was homeless at the time. Eugene had stripped off most of his clothes and began attacking Poppo and tearing his clothes off as well.

Horrified onlookers called police as the attack continued and Eugene began to eat away at Poppo’s face. By the time police arrived, Eugene had ripped the flesh from Poppo’s face in strips and had bitten off part of his nose and gouged out his eyes.

“He attacked me,” Poppo said of Rudy Eugene during a July 19, 2012 interview with Miami homicide detectives. “He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically that’s all there is to say about it.”

Eugene was in a frenzied attack and the only way police could get him to stop was to shoot and kill him on the spot. Paramedics came and took Poppo to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for the bizarre cannibalistic attack.

In talks with detectives Poppo said Eugene started to scream as he was attacking him and said that both of the men were going to die. Poppo described the attack saying Eugene “mashed my face into the sidewalk. My face is all bet and mashed up. My eyes, my eyes got plucked out. He was strangling me in wrestling holds as he was plucking my eyes out.”

Poppo’s chances for survival looked grim, but he pulled through the initial days of the recovery and began to try to put his life back together as best he could.

While the horror of that day will stay in the minds of Poppo, his family, Eugene’s family, and everyone involved in the story; the 65-year-old Poppo has made remarkable strides since he was first taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.  Today a lot has changed for Poppo since the horrific incident.

Poppo is living at Jackson Memorial Perdue Medical Center and has gained more than 50 pounds since he first came into the hospital’s emergency room. Poppo is working with an occupational therapist and has learned how to dress himself, feed himself, shower and shave.

In addition, according to JMH, Poppo was given a guitar which he practices playing daily. Jackson is expected to release a recent video and photos to the media as well on Tuesday.

Beginning Monday through June 2nd, officers and troopers will crack down on drivers and passengers who are not buckled up.

“As we kick off the busy summer driving season it’s important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night – no excuses,” said Homestead Police Chief Alexander E. Rolle Jr.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 52 percent of the 21,253 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2011 were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

Deaths involving non-use of seat belts were more prevalent at night than during the daytime.

According to NHTSA, 62 percent of the 10,135 people who died in vehicle crashes in 2011 did so during the overnight hours of 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

“Seat belts have saved thousands of lives and are one of the most effective safety tools in your vehicle. Buckle up Florida, it is the law,” said FHP Director Col. David Brierton.

Florida’s safety belt law requires all front seat passengers to buckle up. Occupants under the age of 18 must wear their safety belts regardless of where they sit in a vehicle.

That includes Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal, who recently talked about the Bulls’ point guard on 106.7 The Fan.

“That’s hard, because I’ve never experienced that injury,” Beal said. “And I know what type of injury that is, it’s possible it’s gonna happen again. Knock on wood. But at the same time, you might have to give it a go. If you’re practicing for two months and everybody in practice is saying you’re practicing well, I figure you gotta give it a shot in a game.”

At first, it seemed like Beal caught himself and wanted to give Rose the benefit of the doubt.

“It’s his decision. I can’t really have a say so in it. If he doesn’t feel he’s mentally confident to be able to go out there and help the team, I guess I can’t really blame him for it.”

But then Beal was asked if he would lose respect for a Wizards’ teammate if they made the same decision.

“A little bit. Yeah, I would,” he said. “The type of player he is, and the mentality and competitiveness that he has, I think he would have gave it a go. I don’t know what was holding him back. I think he’s scared it’s probably going to happen again and he won’t be the same. But you’re never the same after an injury. But you just have to fight through it and do something else to be able to impact the game. I’m not sure what it is he has to do. I really can’t speak for him.”

HelpingFeelsGood.org is a new website created by Neighbors 4 Neighbors which matches volunteers to those in need. But it’s much more than that.

Volunteers sign up and share their interests, expertise and skills and the website then sends a list of projects that match their profile once a week. Volunteers can also search the site via zip code, agency name or key word to find projects.

For local non-profits, the site is a free resource that case workers can use to advocate on behalf of the clients they serve. By posting projects, connecting with local skilled volunteers and sharing the stories behind those connections, the non-profits are able to get great exposure to new audiences.

Since the launch of HelpingFeelsGood.org on March 4th, more than 200 volunteers have registered on the site and many have already been matched with projects at non-profits like Casa Valentina.

Casa Valentina provides resources to young adults aging out of foster care. They’re using HelpingFeelsGood.org to post projects and connect with volunteers like professional organizer, Gayle Jacobs.

“There’s nothing better than to be able to volunteer doing something you love to do, and I love organizing!” said Jacobs, who runs her own business, Actually Organized.

Jacobs made over the community room for Casa Valentina and continues to give back to the organization by teaching life skills classes to residents.

“There was just such a connection with an organization that I could do what I’m best at,” Jacobs explained.

The connection was also valued by Casa Valentina residents and staff.

“I never would have dreamed to have come into contact with a volunteer who could bring so much to our organization,” explained Assistant Executive Director Melissa Peerless.

But the residents benefitted most from the match.

“It’s an amazing feeling when you have that kind of support behind you,” said 21-year-old, Angel Smith. Smith said seeing people donate their time and talents has helped her learn new things and dream big about her future. “It opens a lot of doors a lot of opportunities,” said Smith.

Governor Rick Scott signed into law a bill that reauthorized the state’s popular back-to-school sales tax holiday for 2013. This year’s holiday will take place August 2nd through 4th.

The sales tax holiday will not have to pay the state’s 6 percent sales tax on clothes worth $75 or less or on school supplies that are $15 or less.

But this year’s tax holiday also has a new twist. Those looking for a new computer worth $750 or less also will not have to pay taxes on their purchase during the three-day period.

This tax break also applies to tablets, laptops, electronic readers. Shoppers will still have to pay taxes on the purchase of a cellphone.

Turns out, it was the longest Burmese python ever captured in Florida; it measured 18 feet, 8 inches. The python was a 128-pound female that was not carrying eggs, according to University of Florida scientists who examined the snake. The previous record length for a Burmese python captured in the wild in Florida was 17 feet, 7 inches.

On May 11th, Jason Leon was riding late at night in a rural area of southeast Miami-Dade County when he and his passenger spotted the python. About 3 feet of the snake was sticking out of the roadside brush. Leon stopped his car, grabbed the snake behind its head and started dragging it out of the brush. When the snake began to wrap itself around his leg, he called for assistance from others and then used a knife to kill the snake. Leon once owned Burmese pythons as pets and has experience handling this non-venomous constrictor species.

“Jason Leon’s nighttime sighting and capture of a Burmese python of more than 18 feet in length is a notable accomplishment that set a Florida record. The FWC is grateful to him both for safely removing such a large Burmese python and for reporting its capture,” said Kristen Sommers, Exotic Species Coordination Section Leader for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Leon reported his python capture to the FWC’s South Region office, which connected him with 888-IveGot1 (888-483-4861), the FWC’s hotline for reporting exotic species.

Cheryl Millett of The Nature Conservancy’s Python Patrol Program helped coordinate the response, and Jeff Fobb of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Venom Response Program arranged to pick up the snake from Leon.

Finally, the python was turned over to the University of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, where UF staff experienced in working with Burmese pythons performed the necropsy.

“With the help of people like Mr. Leon and our ongoing partnerships with other agencies, the FWC is advancing what we know about Burmese pythons in Florida,” Sommers said. “This event highlights how the Exotic Species hotline allows the public to help us obtain more information about Burmese pythons, so we can improve management of this invasive species. It also reflects the cooperative efforts of the FWC and its partners to address python sightings by the public.”

The public is asked to report sightings of exotic species to IveGot1.org or 888-IveGot1. There is also a free smartphone app: IVEGOT1.

Researchers say Burmese pythons are eating their way through the Everglades, decimating populations of native mammals. The snakes can grow more than 20 feet in length, and they have no predators, other than the humans desperately trying to control their population.

The New York Times compiled the data provided by Medicare into charts that showed health care costs are all over the map around the country.

For example, Baptist Hospital of Miami averages bills that are 1-to-2 times the U.S. average. A similar cost structure can be found at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

But even among similarly priced hospitals, the costs can still vary. Baptist Hospital charges Medicare an average of $74,610 for a major joint replacement, which is 1.5 times the U.S. average. For the same procedure Jackson charges Medicare $63,573, or 1.3 times the national average. Finally, Memorial Regional in Hollywood charges Medicare $60,742 for a major joint replacement.

However, the actual amount Medicare pays each hospital for the procedure varies as well. Medicare pays Baptist an average of $20,610, pays Jackson an average of $24,467; and Memorial Regional an average of $14,981 for a major joint replacement.

Other procedures revealed similar cost disparities including laproscopic gallbladder removal. At Baptist, a laproscopic gallbladder removal will see the hospital bill Medicare $61,585; at Jackson the billed cost is $33,125; and Memorial charges $62,191.

On the flip side, Medicare actually pays Baptist $10,933 for the gallbladder removal; pays Jackson $13,322; and Memorial receives $8,582 for the procedure from Medicare.

Across South Florida, the majority of hospitals charge Medicare around 1 to 2 times the national average for different procedures. Some notable exceptions are Doctors Hospital, Coral Gables Hospital, Hialeah Hospital, and the Cleveland Clinic in Weston.

Doctors Hospital, Coral Gables Hospital, and Hialeah Hospital all charge Medicare more than 2 times the U.S. average for procedures, according to the New York Times data. On the other side, the Cleveland Clinic bills Medicare less than the U.S. average for health procedures.

Across the state, most facilities south of the I-4 corridor bill Medicare 1-2 times the national average for procedures, according to the Times.

Scattered showers have been sweeping in across the area since the morning hours and throughout the day the storm chance will remain high due to a surge of deep tropical moisture across the peninsula. A short wave trough combined with a very moist, unstable atmosphere and the daytime heating may even lead to some strong to severe storms.

Some neighborhoods have already seen heavy downpours and excessive lightning. In fact, an Urban Flood advisory was issued for Northeastern Broward and Eastern Palm Beach counties due to rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour.

Some of the stronger storms may produce gusty winds up to 50 mph and there is even the slight chance of small hail. We will continue to see a good chance of storms through late week as the moisture continues to build in across the Sunshine State.

Our very Summery weather pattern will continue with highs in the upper 80s. When you factor in the humidity, it could feel like the 90s or warmer. With higher dewpoints and persistent daily showers and storms, this could be the start of the “Rainy Season.”

We have to wait for the National Weather Service for the official word. Later this week some drier air will likely move in and by Friday and especially into Saturday the rain chance will go down. With a slight dip in degrees and more of a breeze, it will feel much more comfortable for the long Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

“The big question is who won? No one knows who won,” said Zephyrhills resident April Garcia.

The sole ticket for the highest Powerball jackpot in history was purchased at a Publix in the central Florida town with a population of 13,337.

Until Sunday, the small suburb was best known for its spring water and skydiving, but that was before the world found out the lucky lottery ticket was sold there.

“Oh my God it could have been me,” said Patty Bickford who bought a Powerball ticket at the same store.

“You got a better chance of getting hit by lightning here than you do winning the lottery,” said Zephyrhill’s resident Tom Brown.

Some are crossing their fingers, hoping the winner is a family member, a neighbor or even a friend of a friend.

“I’m hoping maybe I know the person,” said Matthew Barbosa who won just $4 from his Powerball ticket.

Lottery officials still haven’t said if the winner has stepped forward.

“They’re probably scared that’s a lot of money,” said Barbosa. “They’re probably waiting for the right time to come forward and hiding out until then.”

The lucky winner can decide to take $590.5 million annuity or they can opt for a lump sum of $376.9 million.

“I just hope whoever won it needed it and they do good with it,” said Linda Watson.

Under Florida law, the winner’s name, age and hometown will be made public as soon as the prize money is collected.

The Publix that sold the winning ticket will get a bonus commission of $85,000.

Homeowners in the Bonita Grand development have installed security systems, bought guard dogs and even weapons – but the burglaries continue.

Joycie Lindsey said ‘being fed up’ is an understatement. She’s flat out furious and now she’s armed.

“I’ve got a gun and I will use it. I have had lessons, I have gone to the shooting range and I will shoot them if they come back,” said Lindsey.

Burglars have broken into her new home twice and she’s lived there for less than two weeks.

“I lost all my jewelry except what I have on. I feel violated, I mean this is just terrible,” said Lindsey.

Bonita Grand is still under construction and sits half empty. The residents say the developer DR Horton has a security guard who patrols the area where homes are under construction but not the area where residents are living.

“Everyone who moves in here, right after that in two or three weeks they get hit. That’s outrageous,” said Abdul Siddiqkara.

Burglars snatched his suits, cash, his wife’s jewelry and even their pillowcases. He said he has asked for help from police and he’s asked the developer to pay for security in the area until the community is finished. He said he’s gotten nowhere on either front.

“So where do I turn? I went to the police. The police say we can’t come down here every time, we cannot just patrol here. I have no other choice than to go to Channel 4,” Siddiqkara told CBS4’s Natalia Zea.

Lindsey is also ready for resolution because she has more to worry about than target practice. She is battling cancer.

“I’d really like to get my hands on the person who did this to me. I’m 76 years old but I believe I could just beat the living you know what out of them,” said Lindsey.

CBS4 contacted DR Horton’s corporate office in Texas.

“D.R. Horton is aware of the recent issues some of our homeowners have experienced in the Bonita
Grand neighborhood,” according to a statement. “We are cooperating with police efforts to address the situation and have asked our security company to report suspicious activity to the police. We have contacted our security
subcontractor to learn about options available to current homeowners interested in adding security
such as wireless alarm systems.”

The company said homeowners could install alarms and cameras to make their homes safer, but they would have to pay for it themselves.

Anthony will have his left shoulder re-examined now that the Knicks have been eliminated from the playoffs, the Daily News reported.

He hurt the shoulder on April 14 and aggravated it in the first round against Boston. A banged-up Anthony insisted he was “fine” after the Celtics series.

“(I)t really just kind of popped in and out a little bit,” he said. “But I’m fine.”

New York was eliminated Saturday by the Indiana Pacers.

The Knicks are “hopeful” the injury “is not serious and that it will improve with rest and therapy and won’t require surgery,” the Daily News reported. Also according to the paper, Anthony won’t need arthroscopic surgery on his now-better right knee.

Meanwhile, J.R. Smith said he wants “to retire a Knick” when asked about his future following New York’s ouster Saturday. He’s expected to opt out of his contract this offseason.

“I don’t want to go anywhere else,” said the guard, who picked the wrong time of year to go ice-cold. “I love it. I love my teammates. I love my coaches. I was sitting in the locker room looking at my jersey after the game just knowing I don’t want to be anywhere else except for in the orange and blue. So we’ll see.”

Guard Pablo Prigioni will also have a big decision to make. The impending free agent may head back to the Spanish league next season because his wife “wants to return overseas,” the New York Post reported.

“I think it’s not the moment to talk about that now,” Prigioni said Saturday, according to the Post. “It’s painful to lose. It’s painful to start the vacation now. This is about the team. Now I stay quiet.”

A few weeks ago, South Florida might have been waiting on pins and needles to see if it would be chosen to host one of the games. But after Speaker of the House Will Weatherford killed the stadium deal to upgrade Sun Life Stadium; Miami’s chances appear to be slim and none.

Despite the efforts of the Miami Dolphins, between Weatherford and a county still reeling from the boondoggle the Marlins pulled off to get its stadium, the Fins were fighting an uphill battle. Now, as early as Tuesday the area could be denied two key Super Bowls.

South Florida was battling Santa Clara/San Francisco for the rights to hold the 50th Anniversary Super Bowl, which will be one of the biggest in league history. While Miami has South Beach and a long history of hosting the game; Santa Clara/San Francisco has a $1 billion stadium under construction that will be state of the art.

The San Francisco area hasn’t hosted a Super Bowl since 1985 when Stanford Stadium was the home for the big game which matched up San Francisco, and ironically enough, the Miami Dolphins. Incidentally, San Francisco beat Miami that time as well.

If South Florida didn’t get Super Bowl L, the area was then going to be matched up against Houston for the rights to Super Bowl LI (51) the following year. However, Miami isn’t expected to win in a matchup against Houston either.

Miami’s biggest problem now is the league has threatened in the past not to hold another Super Bowl in South Florida without a stadium upgrade. Now that no upgrade is in the cards for the foreseeable future, if the NFL gives the area the big game, future arm twisting to help get stadiums built won’t carry the same amount of weight.

Sports Illustrated’s Peter King summed it up this way: “I think the problem with even strongly considering South Florida, and giving another Super Bowl to the Dolphins’ stadium, is this: The league has emphasized giving Super Bowls to franchises and markets that have either built new stadiums or refurbished needy ones. There are no active plans to improve the Miami stadium. And to hold the 50th anniversary Super Bowl in a stadium that’s not among the 20 best (either open or under construction) would go against most everything the league has held dear in its Super Bowl selection process in recent years.”

Miami has hosted 10 Super Bowls throughout the history of the big game. The last Super Bowl hosted by Miami was in 2010 and saw the New Orleans Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts.

But, if the area is denied both Super Bowl 50 and 51, NFL.com’s Albert Breer reported that it could signal the area will fall out of the Super Bowl rotation like San Diego did recently.

Swift won eight of 11 awards, including top artist and top Billboard 200 album for “Red.” She told the crowd: “You are the longest and best relationship I ever had.”

She also had a colorful performance of her hit “22″ — starting backstage and working her way to the main stage on the back of a bike with help from a dozen background dancers and a flurry of red balloons.

Justin Bieber also performed — twice — and was also a multiple winner with three awards, including top male artist, social artist and the fan-voted milestone award, beating out Swift and Bruno Mars. When accepting the latter — where boos were heard — he alluded to the tumultuous weeks he’s had in the public eye.

“I’m 19 years old; I think I’m doing a pretty good job. And basically from my heart I really just want to say it should really be about the music, it should be about the craft that I’m making. This is not a gimmick,” he said. “I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously and all this other bull should not be spoken.”

Bieber performed with will.i.am and solo when he sang “Take You” in leather pants, a leather vest and a black shirt that had one sleeve, as blue laser lights beamed.

Miguel, too, had a show-stopping performance, though he seemed to kick a fan when he jumped over the crowd while singing his hit “Adorn.” The R&B singer seemed to have landed part of his body on one woman, who walked away, and kicked another, who held her head low.

Maroon 5 and fun. were also nominated for 11 awards and walked away with one win each in pre-telecast announcements. Gotye and Rihanna had the second-most wins with four awards each.

But the awards show, airing live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on ABC, is less about the trophies — which reflect success on the Billboard charts — and more about the performances. Selena Gomez sang her seductive new hit, “Come & Get It,” while Chris Brown danced around the stage to his latest single, “Fine China,” though his voice began to crack during the performance. Duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also performed their massive hit, “Thrift Shop,” which won top rap song.

“First and foremost, gotta thank Goodwill, gotta thank Value Village,” Macklemore said to laughs.

Kid Rock, who presented the award, sparked controversy when he told the crowd, “Let’s give it up for people lip-synching under pre-recorded music.”

Mars and his band kicked off the show in silky red suits that matched their silky dance moves, with bright gold disco balls hanging above them during a performance of the upbeat and old-school flavored “Treasure.”

Nicki Minaj won the first award in the live telecast for top rap artist, beating out Drake, Flo Rida, Pitbull and Psy.

“I definitely did not expect this one,” she said, wearing a bright red dress.

She later performed “High School” with Lil Wayne and gave the rapper a provocative lap dance onstage.

Prince, who received the icon award, closed the awards show with a melody of his jams in a turquoise and purple ensemble. He sang, dance and rocked on the guitar.

Madonna won top touring artist, dance artist and dance album for “MDNA.”

“Thank you for supporting me for three decades. Without you I truly wouldn’t be here,” she said.

Pitbull made two appearances, one with Jennifer Lopez and another with Christina Aguilera. His hit with Aguilera, “Feel This Moment,” samples A-Ha’s “Take On Me” and Morten Harket came out to sing a line from the song.

Comedian-actor Tracy Morgan was the show’s host, and he dressed as Psy in a bright yellow suit when the rapper-singer was onstage to present an award. They had a dance battle to Psy’s new single, “Gentleman.”

Miami-Dade will receive more than $1.7 billion, about 65 percent more than the county with the next-largest share, Broward, which took in a shade over $1.05 billion.

Rounding out the top 10 for state funds were Hillsborough ($695.4 million), Alachua ($688.5 million), Duval ($625.8 million), Orange ($542.1 million), Leon ($507.9 million), Palm Beach ($435 million), Pasco ($252 million) and Lee ($220.7 million).

The figures don’t account for the funding that comes from the state’s classroom spending formula or programs like the Medicaid health system for low-income Floridians. The projects listed for individual counties account for more than $9.5 billion of the $74.5 billion budget currently being weighed by Gov. Rick Scott.

They also don’t account for things like prisons located in the counties, and the numbers don’t include a spate of multi-county projects also broken out by the Legislature in Friday’s report.

Finally, Scott is likely to strike some projects from the budget with his line-item veto, which could change the numbers at least slightly. Scott has until May 24 to decide what to do with the budget.

The county with the least to show in direct spending from the budget, which takes effect July 1, is Union County in rural north Florida. It received just $176,225. Only two other counties had less than $1 million: Liberty, which had $218,917; and Wakulla, which takes home $416,884.

Rounding out the bottom 10 were Lafayette ($1.2 million), Gilchrist ($1.3 million), Dixie ($2.8 million), Hardee ($3 million), Jefferson ($3.5 million), Franklin ($3.8 million) and Gadsden ($5.1 million).

Overall, 17 counties took home more than $100 million each, with two counties (Sumter and Seminole) missing that mark by less than $5 million. And 17 collected less than $10 million.

Last year, the two teams met in the Eastern Conference semifinals and between hard fouls, some blood-letting, flagrant fouls, technical fouls, and choke signs, the series saw a little bit of everything.

The Pacers pushed the Heat to the brink only to see LeBron James and Dwyane Wade put the team on their backs and will the Heat to the Eastern Conference Finals last year. This year, LeBron is once again the NBA MVP and Miami should be the heavy favorite again to move to the NBA Finals.

Just don’t tell that to the Pacers.

Indiana head coach Frank Vogel, who needled the referees and the Heat last year before the series started, was at it again Saturday when he said the Heat were “just the next team that’s in our way.”

That caught the attention of the world’s greatest player and LeBron responded, “We’re a great team. We’re very confident. We’ll be ready for them. If we’re just another team, you don’t prepare, you really don’t prepare for just another team. We’re not just another team. You have to prepare for us.”

After losing to the Heat last year, perhaps giving LeBron and company some bulletin board material wasn’t the best move for Vogel. After all, last year Indiana had Miami down 2-1 and still couldn’t close the deal.

But, Indiana also won two out of the three matchups with the Heat this year during the regular season and that could signal problems for the Heat. But, Miami has been playing at an other-worldly level in the second-half of the season and comes into the series winning 45 of their last 48 games.

“If we’re the same team that we were last year, that won’t be good enough,” Spoelstra said. “Period. Fact. That’s why we’ve spent so much time this year trying to develop habits to improve. We don’t feel we’re the same team that played the Indiana Pacers last year.”

Indiana poses one of the toughest challenges for the Heat simply based on their length if nothing else. Between center Roy Hibbert, who stands 7’2” and power forward David West, the Pacers’ front line is one of the best in the NBA.

Adding in a rapidly developing George Hill and Paul George and Indiana’s roster is almost tailor-made to try to take down the defending champion.

Miami will attempt to exploit this by using a smaller lineup and running Chris Andersen and Chris Bosh at Hibbert to pull him out of the lane more on the defensive end, thus opening up holes for LeBron and Wade to exploit.

But Miami will continue to need a complete contribution from the entire roster including players like Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole. Chalmers was almost non-existent in the series against the Bulls and Cole stepped up his game to replace Chalmers’ lost offense.

Cole could be Miami’s x-factor with his speed on both the offensive and defensive end of the court. It could also come down to three-point shooting and Miami would like for Shane Battier to rediscover his shot in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The winner of the series will head to the NBA Finals to battle it out against the Western Conference champion which will be either the San Antonio Spurs or the Memphis Grizzlies.

Put simply, the Marlins are either the worst or next to worst team in Major League Baseball.

Looking at the major offensive statistical categories in the Major League, Miami ranks last in runs per game, runs scored, hits, home runs, RBI’s, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS. The worst part is the Marlins are leaps and bounds worse than the next to last team.

For example, the Marlins are more than a half-run worse than the next worse team, the L.A. Dodgers. When it comes to RBI’s, Miami is 26 behind the next worst team, once again the Dodgers.

After exploding for 14 runs in a victory at Philadelphia on May 5, the Marlins’ offense has gone into cold storage. The Fish have been shut out four times since then and have been outscored by a total marging of 49-23, or an average score of 4.1 to 1.9 runs per game.

As for the pitching, it’s not better for the Fish. The Marlins are worst in the National League in wins and worst in losses as well. The Marlins haven’t had a pitcher toss a complete game yet this season and have mustered just six saves through 393 innings pitched.

Not surprisingly, the Marlins have mustered just four victories throughout the month of May and have just eleven games left in the month.

Still, there are a few bright spots for the Fish if you look hard enough. Right-fielder Marcell Ozuna has hit nearly .300 since he was called up from the minor leagues and if Giancarlo Stanton can get healthy, would make a solid combination moving forward for the Fish.

Scott already has signed five death warrants this year, including three in a recent span of less than four weeks.

“I go through them and when people have exhausted their appeals and when they’re finished with their clemency process, then I continue to move the process along,” Scott said.

So far only one of the five condemned men has been executed. Larry Eugene Mann was put to death by lethal injection last month for kidnapping and murdering 10-year-old Elisa Vera Nelson on Nov. 4, 1980.

Still, there are five active warrants. Scott signed John Errol Ferguson’s death warrant last year, but the execution has been delayed as his lawyers seek appeals. Florida law states that once a warrant is signed, it remains in full effect even if the initial execution date passes.

If the sentences are carried out this year for each of the active warrants, it would guarantee at least the most executions in Florida in one year since six people were executed in 2000, Gov. Jeb Bush’s second year in office. The only other year there have been more than four executions since the death penalty reinstatement was in 1984 under Gov. Bob Graham, when eight people were put to death. Two prisoners were executed in Scott’s first year in office, and three were executed last year.

That pace might not continue, though. Scott recognizes that it takes resources at the attorney general’s office to challenge appeals and it adds to the courts’ workload when warrants are signed, said Pete Antonacci, the governor’s top lawyer.

“The governor is sensitive to that and is making sure the system operates smoothly,” Antonacci said. “We’re making sure we don’t do too much at one time.”

There are 400 men and five women on Florida’s death row — and most of them have been there for more than a decade. Sixteen of the inmates were sentenced in the 1970s, 73 in the 1980s and 142 during the 1990s.

Signing a death warrant isn’t just a process of randomly picking a condemned prisoner, Antonacci said. Another lawyer in the governor’s offices monitors all death cases and where they stand in the state and federal appeals process.

Once appeals are exhausted, the governor’s office will pick cases to undergo a review by the Office of Executive Clemency, which includes an interview with the condemned and other people involved in the case to determine whether there’s any reason the governor shouldn’t sign a warrant. That process is sometimes delayed because public defenders have to appoint a lawyer for the condemned prisoner and their budgets are limited, Antonacci said.

Antonacci also pointed out that the Supreme Court reviews every death case to make sure the punishment is proper well before the governor signs a death warrant.

Public defenders are suing the state, saying they don’t have enough lawyers or money to handle their workload. They’re seeking the right to not accept cases. The state Supreme Court is reviewing the claim and has yet to issue an opinion.

The five people now awaiting execution are:

— John Errol Ferguson, condemned for killing eight people in Miami-Dade County in 1977 and 1978, including six who were bound and killed execution-style. At the time it was the largest mass slaying in county history. Scott signed his death warrant Sept. 5, but his execution has been on hold while the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit considers his lawyers’ claim he suffers from mental illness so severe that he shouldn’t be eligible.

— Paul Augustus Howell, a South Florida drug dealer who killed Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Jimmy Fulford with a pipe bomb in 1992. Scott signed his death warrant Jan. 18, but the execution is on hold while the 11th Circuit Court considers his lawyers’ claim that his trial lawyer had a conflict of interest due to a death threat that prompted him to withdraw from Howell’s federal drug case. They also argue that the lawyer failed to find and present mitigating evidence that could have persuaded Howell’s jury to recommend a life sentence.

— Elmer Leon Carroll, scheduled to die by lethal injection May 29 for raping and suffocating 10-year-old Christine McGowan after breaking into her Apopka home in 1990. Scott signed his death warrant April 17.

— William Van Poyck, scheduled to die June 12 for the murder of prison guard Fred Griffis in 1987. Scott signed his death warrant May 3.

— Marshall Lee Gore, scheduled to die June 24 for the 1988 murders of Susan Roark and Robyn Novick. He also left a third victim, Tina Coralis, for dead after beating, raping and stabbing her. Scott signed his death warrant Monday.

He also announced that he used his line item veto power to nix a three percent tuition increase for university students.

Scott pointed out that he had to work while he was in college in order to pay for it and said students should be able to graduate and get a job without being burdened by “massive debt.”

“Higher education is one of the best ways we can Floridians to get a great job,” Scott wrote. “It is also one of the best ways we can provide every family the opportunity to pursue their dreams, regardless of where they start in life … Therefore I believe it is incumbent upon state leaders to ensure the cost of higher education remains accessible to as many Floridians as possible.”

Scott has been critical of rising tuition costs for the last year. He vetoed a bill back in 2012 that would have allowed both the University of Florida and Florida State University to raise tuition rates above the current 15 percent a year cap.

The governor did not include any tuition hikes in the budget recommendations he gave legislators earlier this year.

But House Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, pushed for a tuition hike despite Scott’s opposition. He justified it by pointing out that the state university tuition rates remain among the lowest in the nation. The hike was expected to generate close to $50 million for the state’s public universities and 28 colleges.

In a statement Weatherford said Sunday that the “rumor that the governor will veto tuition increases tomorrow is not a surprise.” He said he looked forward to working with university presidents and other officials to move the state university system “forward to the benefit of our students.”

Scott’s actions, however, may not completely spare students attending one of the state’s 11 public universities.

A separate law states that if legislators do not increase tuition in the annual state budget than it automatically increases for state universities by the rate of inflation. That would amount to a 1.7 percent hike this fall.

That law, however, is silent on what happens if the governor vetoes the hike included in the budget.
Universities are also allowed to raise tuition above any rate set by the Legislature as long as it does not exceed 15 percent. That is viewed as long-shot, however, because those hikes have to be approved by the Florida Board of Governors. Scott has remade the board in the last few months with new appointments.

And in his veto message Scott included quotes from top higher education officials who supported his decision to veto the tuition hike.

University of Florida President Bernie Machen said that since lawmakers provided a “badly needed funding increase” his institution would not be seeking a tuition increase. UF was given additional money as part of legislation that designates it a “pre-eminent university.”

David Armstrong, president of Broward College, stated: “We are confident we can hold down the student cost to attend college and continue to provide excellent quality and expansion of services to support student success.”

There are legal questions about whether Scott even has the power to veto the tuition hike because of the way lawmakers authorized it.

The money for the tuition hike is embedded in large sums set aside for colleges and universities. Lawmakers then wrote a budget provision that sets the tuition amount 3 percent higher.

Scott is vetoing this provision even though the state constitution says the governor “may not veto any qualification or restriction” included in the budget without vetoing the money attached to it.

Former Gov. Charlie Crist back in 2007 also vetoed a proposed tuition hike. Yet despite questions about his authority, the veto stood because no one challenged it in court.

An Endangered Missing Child Alert was issued for Arianna Willis over the weekend.

Willis, who is 10-months old, was last seen at 2951 NW 211th Street in Miami Gardens.

Police believe she was taken by her father, 42-year old Dexter Jones.

On Sunday a Miami Gardens officer was flagged down told that Jones and the girl were in an establishment at NW 199th Street and NW 2nd Avenue. When the officer went there, they were.

The girl was turned over the Department of Children and Families. Jones was arrest and charged with violating a court order that he surrender the child.

As important as the dress, the shoes and the jewelry, the most essential red carpet accessory is one you wouldn’t even know.

“It was this whole world nobody even knew existed and I’ve never heard about,” said celebrity escort Chris Gaida. “And one show led to another and I’ve been celebrity escorting for 14 years now.”

Gaida has appeared on the arm of some of the biggest stars in Tinseltown including Julia Roberts, Betty White, Cameron Diaz, Angelina Jolie and Mariah Carey.

He recently wrote a book “Arm Candy: A Celebrity Escort’s Tales From The Red Carpet” that gives the inside scoop on the business.

“The term celebrity escort sounds very scandalous but it really isn’t,” said Gaida. “It’s a professional job that’s existed for decades that’s one of the best kept secrets in Hollywood.”

It’s a secret because stars want it to appear like they merely arrive at award shows and float through the evening, when in reality it’s a carefully orchestrated affair.

“I say we have a dual responsibility. One with the producers to make sure the timing of the show is good and also with the celebrities to make sure they’re relaxed and let them be the stars that they are,” said Gaida.

However, problems can easily arise and ruin everything.

Gaida was set to escort Marg Helgenberger down the 2004 Grammy’s red carpet, but she never arrived.

“I found out her limo got stuck in traffic and she missed all of her media opportunities,” said Gaida. “A fun fact is the limo company and driver gave her free limo service for a year.”

It’s good to be a celebrity but what makes a great celebrity escort?  Gaida found out the hard way.

“It’s funny because I didn’t know how to behave as a celebrity escort. There’s no manual or there’s no college class of what to do, so I acted like a butler.” said Gaida.

He said like many celebrities escorts, he was discovered and asked to escort Molly Shannon who went easy on him.

“She loosened me up and teased me and then I realized I just needed to be myself,” said Gaida.

Soon he became a red carpet staple for a job he almost passed on, a job that now pays hundreds of dollars a night.

“I was temping at MTV and a random guy came up and said ‘Hey, do you want to escort?’ I said ‘No, I don’t sleep around, I don’t do this casting couch thing’ and he reassured me it was legit,” said Gaida.

He took a chance and scored an all access pass to award shows, red carpets and celebrity friends becoming the ultimate wingman.

“Being a celebrity escort is like being a stage manager, best friend, publicist, security guard all rolled into one,” said Gaida.

The accident happened in the westbound lanes around 2:45 a.m. Saturday west of University Drive.

The driver of a 2004 Hyundai, identified as 33 year old Jeffrey Steven Bryce Jr. from Miramar, was stopped in the left lane when the car was rear ended by Nissan driven by 26-year old Evan Soto, according to the FHP.

On impact the Hyundai erupted into flames. Bryce, who was critically injured, was pulled from the car by Soto and another driver. The person in the passenger seat died on the scene.

The FHP has not released the name of the passenger.

So far only 47 people have signed up for the less inexpensive coverage offered by the state’s ‘insurer of last resort’.

“It sounds good but I don’t remember hearing about it,” said Doral homeowner Marco Villalobos.

The HO-8 policy covers losses including fires, hurricanes, explosions and vandalism. On average, it’s about 23-percent cheaper than the standard Citizens policy.

However, there are some restrictions. The policy is only available on homes that are older than 50 years old and worth less than $200,000. It also has other restrictions, including caps on theft claims and replacement cost payments.  it also offers very limited coverage.

“I assume it’s for their best and not for the best of their customers,”  said Villalobos.

Some lawmakers think there there should be more done to lower insurance costs for everyone.

“Our offices are getting bombarded by insurance calls that my insurance is astronomical,” said Rep. Frank Artiles. “It’s becoming cost prohibitive to live in South Florida.

Last year the Florida Legislature mandated that Citizens offer the cheaper coverage.

The Florida Highway Patrol said around 2:00 p.m. the man was riding on Ives Dairy Road and NE 10^th ave. when he lost control of his motorcycle, hit the sidewalk and slammed into a light pole which sent it toppling to the ground.

The man, who was thrown from the bike, died on the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The event, held at Evelyn Greer Park, was designed to get children of all ages motivated to be active and eat healthy. It started last year when a group of Pinecrest students wanted to find ways to get their friends moving.

“We were all talking about how not a lot of kids exercise at home. Nobody likes to eat healthy. So we thought that there should be an organization or a day for kids to go out and get some exercise while having fun,” said Sofia De La Pena who helped come up with the idea for Fit Kids Day.

So what was her favorite activity to take part in?

“I like the Miami Elite volleyball because I play volleyball, so that’s kind of my favorite,” said De La Pena.

Activities throughout the day included tennis, martial arts and learning relaxation techniques. There were also bounce houses and a rock climbing wall.

“It’s a day for children and their families to experiment with different forms of activity that they might not have had the opportunity to try out before, to learn a new skill, get active, get physically fit and enjoy the parks,” said Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner.

Lerner said this year’s Fit Kids Day fell on the same weekend as National Kids To Parks Day so it seemed truly fitting.

It happened Sunday afternoon just after 1 p.m. The 52-year old worker from Lauderdale Lakes was up on the cargo containers of a ship docked at Berth 30 when one of the containers shifted and injured his leg.

The Sheriff’s Technical Rescue Team was able to reach man using a tower ladder. After stabilizing and immobilizing him on the upper deck of the ship they were able to safely bring him to the ground. The rescue took under an hour.

The man was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries.

They told CBS4 that nine out of 15 occupied homes in the development of Bonita Grand, in the 21000 block of SW 132 Court, have been broken into and items taken. Some of the homes have been burglarized twice.

“They just broke in the first time and they took $2,100 I had in the closet. That was money I had left over from moving. I took it and put it in the closet. I was going to put it in the bank but before I could get it in the bank it was gone, so that’s the first break-in,” said Joycie Lindsey. “So then the second break-in, this is it.”

Lindsey only moved into the neighborhood about ten days ago. She said when she started talking with her neighbors, she learned of the disturbing burglaries.

“They’ve been robbed too,” said Lindsey. “They’ve been getting some good loot and keep coming back.”

Tito Perez, who lives next door to Lindsey, had a similar story.

“Somebody broke the glass in the rear door,” said Perez. “They took everything. They took the jewelry, they took my suits, they took $6,000 in cash I had in my jacket.”

The Kara family, who moved in a short time ago, said “a month and a half ago, like six weeks, and we got cleaned out.”

Lindsey said she’s trying to get the word out to her neighbors and has taken a new precaution.

“I’m afraid but I’ve got a gun and I will use it. I have had lessons, I have gone to the shooting range and I will shoot them if they come back,” said Lindsey. “If I’m here and if I can see them or if I can catch them running out and I can assure you I’ll hit them.”

The residents say the developer has a security guard who patrols the area where homes are under construction but not the area where residents are living. They add that most of the burglaries occur when they are not at home, but one did happen when the homeowners were inside.

Bonita Grand residents would like to see an increase in police patrols in their community after 7 p.m. because that’s when most of the burglaries happen.

Zephyrhills is now known for the one lucky Powerball lottery ticket.

“Oh my God it could have been me,” said Patty Bickford.

Other residents were feeling jealous that the winning ticket was in their own backyard.

“Once in a lifetime that little Zephyrhills, the ticket is here,” said Katy Perry.

Pretty much every person in Zephyrhills, with a population of about 13,000, is curious to find out who won.

“Everyone was Facebooking me, text messaging me, saying you have the winning ticket? I’m like no,” said Perry.

The sole winning ticket was sold in the town’s local Publix. Chris Mccain felt the good vibrations and took a chance with a scratch off game that day.

“The luck was here so I said let’s go out and try it again,” said McCain who won $50 from his ticket. “Better than nothing.”

Nothing compared to the estimated $590.5 million dollar prize payout which is twelve times the amount of Zephyrhills yearly town budget of $49 million.

“I think they’re really blessed and whoever it is probably did deserve the money,” said Garcia.

Lottery officials still haven’t said if the lucky winner has stepped forward but residents are hoping that they at least know someone, who knows someone, who knows the winner.

“Not sure who it is, hope it’s someone I know,” said Yolanda Hughes.

“You think this being such a small town you might know the person. Probably most likely I do know the person but haven’t heard anything yet,” said Garcia.

“I’m happy for whoever it is; I hope it’s someone local,” said Bickford.

The Publix that sold the winning ticket gets a commission of $85,000.

The Diamondbacks scored once in the ninth. Mike Dunn, the Marlins’ third pitcher of the inning, got pinch-hitter A.J. Pollock to ground out on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded to end it.

Marcell Ozuna broke a scoreless tie with a two-run double in the sixth.

Didi Gregorius had three hits for Arizona, which had won four in a row.

Nolasco (3-5) was coming off his worst start of the season, allowing six runs in five innings in a loss to Cincinnati on Tuesday.

But the Marlins’ all-time wins leader bounced back with his best, earning his 79th career victory. He gave up up one run and five hits in eight-plus innings.

After hitting Cody Ross with a pitch in the fourth, Nolasco retired the next 14 batters, striking out the side in the fifth and again in the eighth.

Gregorius led off the ninth with a double, finishing Nolasco’s day after 110 pitches, 80 for strikes.

Closer Steve Cishek relieved got Paul Goldschmidt to ground out as second baseman Derek Dietrich made a backhanded play up the middle. Jason Kubel hit a sacrifice fly that made it 2-1.

After Eric Chavez followed with a pinch-hit single and Martin Prado walked, Dunn came in and walked Miguel Montero to load the bases. Dunn retired Pollock for his second career save.

Wade Miley (3-3) gave up two runs and five hits in six innings while striking out six. He is 2-1 with a 0.89 ERA in three career starts against the Marlins.

With the game scoreless until the sixth, Adeiny Hechavarria and Dietrich singled and Ozuna hit a double off the left-center field wall near the 386-foot sign. It snapped a scoreless inning streak for the Marlins at 14 after Brandon McCarthy tossed a three-hit shutout on Saturday in a 1-0 win.

Ozuna, a 22-year old rookie outfielder, is hitting .295 since being called up on April 30.

After getting nine runs on 16 hits in a series-opening 9-2 win on Friday, Arizona scored just two runs on 10 hits in the final two games.

Not long after the Pacers reached the Eastern Conference finals and another postseason clash with Miami, Vogel called the reigning champions “just the next team that’s in our way.”

So following the Heat practice on Sunday to start preparing for the Pacers, four-time NBA MVP LeBron James insisted that his team would be ready for the challenge of facing Indiana.

Miami beat Indiana in six games last season. The teams start the East finals Wednesday night in Miami.

The innovative tournament features five different Keyswide weigh stations that are to host captains meetings Friday, May 24; register anglers’ catches Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26, and serve as the sites of simultaneous awards presentations Sunday evening.

The first 200 teams that register for the tournament are eligible to win the 24-foot-long SeaHunter boat, said Mike Weinhofer, a veteran Keys angling skipper who conceived the event.

“If you’re among the first 200 teams that register and you catch the tournament’s largest dolphin over 55 pounds, you’ll win the boat,” said Weinhofer. “And that fish is worth another $50,000 if it’s caught from any size SeaHunter boat purchased from an authorized dealer after May 24, 2007.”

Weinhofer added that $15,000 awaits the first-place winner, and cash and prizes are to be awarded in 36 other categories.

Registration/weigh-in locations include Buzzards Roost and Garden Cove Marina in Key Largo, Plantation Yacht Sales in Islamorada, Tarpon Creek Marina and Restaurant in Marathon, Boondocks Grille and Draft House in the Lower Keys and Dante’s Restaurant at Conch Harbor Marina in Key West.

Fish must be caught in Keys waters, although it is permissible to use motor vehicles to drive them to weigh stations before the stations close.

Ireland Nugent, 2, has often been seen clutching a stuffed animal of Winter, the dolphin with a prosthetic tail, in her wheelchair since the April 11 accident. She even carried the toy with her when she left the hospital nearly a month after the accident.

On Saturday, she got to meet the real Winter the dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

She initially cried, but soon reached out and touched the mammal.

Winter lost her tail to a crab trap and has become an ambassador to those who have lost limbs.

Ireland underwent seven surgeries and will be fitted for prosthetic feet in the coming weeks.

On Sunday, Kling was paid a special tribute in Sunrise. The Broward County VA Outpatient Clinic, at 9800 W. Commercial Boulevard, was re-named in his memory.

U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Ted Deutch, who were on hand for the re-naming ceremony, sponsored a bill last year to re-name the clinic after Kling.

Kling’s son Steven and veterans from across South Florida also attended the ceremony at the clinic which serves thousands of veterans every year.

The latest voyage of the starship Enterprise fell short of its predecessor, 2009′s “Star Trek,” which opened with $75.2 million.

Since premiering Wednesday in huge-screen IMAX theaters and expanding Thursday to general cinemas, “Into Darkness” has pulled in $84.1 million, well below distributor Paramount’s initial forecast of $100 million. The film has added $80.5 million overseas.

Someone who bought a ticket in Zephyrhills, outside of Tampa, won the Powerball jackpot of $590 million.

The winning numbers drawn Saturday night were 10-13-14-22-52; the Powerball number was 11.

The Powerball jackpot has be re-set to $40 million for this Wednesday’s drawing.

Florida Lotto players are hoping they’ll have better luck this Wednesday to win lots of cash as the jackpot rolled over for Wednesday’s drawings.

This Wednesday the estimated jackpot for the Florida Lotto will be $12 million.

The winning numbers drawn Saturday were 1-11-19-33-37-49.

Forty-eight tickets matched five numbers to win $4,565.50 each; 2,674 tickets matched four numbers for $68.00 each and 54,226 tickets matched three numbers for $5.00 each.

A woman from Miami and her brother-in-law were fishing from the bridge Sunday around 4:30 a.m. when they heard someone yelling for help from the water below the bridge. The woman said her brother-in-law tried to throw the man a rope but was unsuccessful.

She said he drifted from the oceanside to the bayside and then they lost him.

Sheriff’s dispatchers notified Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, U.S. Coast Guard and marine deputies with the Sheriff’s Office all of whom took part in the search

The Sheriff’s Office said as of Sunday afternoon they hadn’t found the man and no one has been reported missing.

The search continues offshore of the Lower Matecumbe Key area. Anyone with information about anyone missing in the area should call the Sheriff’s Office.

West is joining Fox News.

The network said West’s congressional and military experience along with his fearless approach to voicing key issues will provide valuable insight.

The former Palm Beach area congressman, and Republican tea party favorite, narrowly lost his race for a second term to Patrick Murphy last November. West has said he has no interest in running against Murphy again in 2014 but he hasn’t entirely ruled out a run in another district.

West served in the United States Army for 22 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is currently the director of Next Generation TV Programming.

Around 2:15 p.m., Cheryl A. Bazilius, of Ft. Pierce, got out of parked Ford SUV in the right traffic lane in Terminal 3 to meet her husband who just arrived on a flight. As Bazilius, 68, walked back to get into the SUV she was struck by a bus passing in the center traffic lane.

“As she was getting back into the vehicle it appears she tripped and fell under the wheels of the bus,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mike Jachles.

Bazilius pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the private charter bus, 61-year old Woodrow Minor, received minor injuries.

Investigators said 12 passengers on board the bus, which was headed to Miami so they could board a cruise, were not hurt.

Jessica Young heard the crash.

“You heard the screeches and the screams of the other people and it’s unbelievable it’s terrible this would happen to a poor lady. I just can’t believe it,” she said.

Investigators are still investigating as to why Bazilius stopped the vehicle stopped where she did.

Miley will try to keep the Miami bats quiet and lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to their fifth straight win in the finale of a three-game series at Marlins Park on Sunday.

The Diamondbacks (25-18) moved into sole possession of first place in the NL West on Saturday after Brandon McCarthy pitched a three-hitter to beat the Marlins 1-0, Arizona’s ninth win in 12 games.

“He just got on a roll and we left him in there,” manager Kirk Gibson said. “He did it quickly, that was the best sign of all.”

Arizona starters have keyed the team’s success during the past 12 contests, posting a 2.32 ERA and pitching at least seven innings seven times.

Miley (3-2, 3.75 ERA) contributed one of those strong starts, but his next outing didn’t go well. The left-hander allowed a season-high seven runs over five innings of a 10-1 loss to Atlanta on Monday.

“He didn’t make the pitches he needed to make,” manager Kirk Gibson said.

Miley, though, may be able to bounce back Sunday. He’s given up one run and five hits over 14 1-3 innings while winning his two career starts against the Marlins.

Miley faces a Miami team that ranks last in the major leagues with a .221 batting average and 2.67 runs per game. The NL-worst Marlins (11-32), losers of seven straight, are hitting .188 with five extra-base hits in their last five games against left-handers.

Greg Dobbs (.139), Juan Pierre (.152), Adeiny Hechavarria (.154) and Rob Brantly (.091) have endured the biggest struggles against lefties among the Marlins.

Miami has totaled three runs for Ricky Nolasco (2-5, 4.39) in his past three starts, though the right-hander allowed 10 runs over 11 innings in two of them. He lost all three games.

Nolasco gave up a season-high six runs in five innings of a 6-2 defeat to Cincinnati on Tuesday.

“It kind of stems from our offense, with him going out there he knows he can’t give up much,” manager Mike Redmond said. “He’s trying to be perfect.”

Nolasco has gone 5-2 with a 4.62 ERA in eight career starts against the Diamondbacks, but he’s allowed 14 runs – 10 earned – and 14 hits over eight innings in the last two.

Arizona’s Gerardo Parra, who hit a leadoff homer to account for the only run Saturday, is 13 for 28 during a seven-game hitting streak. Teammate Paul Goldschmidt has gone 11 for 20 with three homers and five doubles over his last five games.

Miami hasn’t lost eight in a row since an 11-game skid June 11-20, 2011.

Gerardo Parra led off the game with a home run for Arizona, which has won four in a row while dealing the Marlins a season-long seven-game losing streak.

McCarthy (1-3) struck out five and walked two while throwing 68 of 99 pitches for strikes in his third career shutout, first since Sept. 3, 2011, against Seattle.

McCarthy was hit in the head by an Erick Aybar line drive on Sept 5. 2012, against the Angels while with Oakland. He suffered a skull fracture and underwent surgery to end his season.

He signed a two-year deal with Arizona in December and went without a win in his first eight starts with his new club.

Last Sunday, McCarthy was pulled after eight scoreless innings and 88 pitches, and Arizona’s relievers blew a late lead during a 4-2 loss in 10 innings to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Parra’s home run to right-center field came on the first pitch from Tom Koehler (0-2) on Saturday. It was Parra’s third career leadoff home run.

Miami had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the first on Chris Coghlan’s single to right, but Parra threw out Derek Dietrich at the plate to end the inning.

McCarthy retired the next 14 batters he faced until Adeiny Hechavarria singled in the sixth. Hechavarria advanced to second on a passed ball, but McCarthy struck out Dietrich to end the inning.

The Marlins had another scoring opportunity in the seventh after a balk by McCarthy advanced Marcell Ozuna to second, but Placido Polanco lined out to end the threat.

McCarthy retired the final nine batters.

Koehler, making his third career start, limited the Diamondbacks to one run and three hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Ryan Webb pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings in relief to extend his scoreless streak to 16 2-3 innings for Miami.

The single winner was sold at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, according to Florida Lottery executive Cindy O’Connell.

“This would be the sixth Florida Powerball winner and right now, it’s the sole winner of the largest ever Powerball jackpot,” O’Connell said. “We’re delighted right now that we have the sole winner.”

She said Florida has had more Powerball winners than any other state.

The winner was not immediately identified publicly and O’Connell did not give any indication just hours after Saturday’s drawing whether anyone had already stepped forward with that winning ticket.

With four out of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, lottery executives said earlier that someone was almost certain to win the game’s highest jackpot, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars — and that’s after taxes.

Saturday night’s winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11.

Estimates had earlier put the jackpot at around $600 million. But Powerball’s online site said Sunday that the jackpot had reached an estimated $590.5 million.

Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery, initially confirmed that one Florida winning ticket had been sold. He told AP that following the Florida winner, the Powerball grand prize was being reset at an estimated jackpot of $40 million, or about $25.1 million cash value.

The chances of winning the prize were astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That’s how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimated that about 80 percent of those possible combinations had been purchased recently.

While the odds are low for any one individual or individuals, O’Connell said, the chance that one hits paydirt is what makes Powerball an “exciting game to play.”

“There is just the chance that you will have the opportunity and Florida is a huge Powerball state. We have had more winners than any other state that participates in Powerball.”

Such longshot odds didn’t deter people across Powerball-playing states — 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands — from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday for their chance at striking it filthy rich.

Calls by AP to the Publix supermarket outlet in Florida where the winning ticket was sold were not answered Sunday.

Elsewhere, Rich said, lottery officials reported 33 winning tickets for a $1,000,000 prize each were sold around 17 states, led by six tickets in New York. He said lotteries reported 2 winning tickets each for the $2,000,000 PowerPlay, one in New York and the other in South Carolina.

Before the drawing, there was a rush for tickets around the country.

At a mini market in the heart of Los Angeles’ Chinatown, employees broke the steady stream of customers into two lines: One for Powerball ticket buyers and one for everybody else. Some people appeared to be looking for a little karma.

“We’ve had two winners over $10 million here over the years, so people in the neighborhood think this is the lucky store,” employee Gordon Chan said as he replenished a stack of lottery tickets on a counter.

The world’s largest jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012. If $600 million, the jackpot would currently include a $376.9 million cash option.

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot — people are interested in the easy investment.

“Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small,” he said. “Two dollars gets you a chance.”

That may be why Ed McCuen has a Powerball habit that’s as regular as clockwork. The 57-year-old electrical contractor from Savannah, Ga., buys one ticket a week, regardless of the possible loot. It’s a habit he didn’t alter Saturday.

“You’ve got one shot in a gazillion or whatever,” McCuen said, tucking his ticket in his pocket as he left a local convenience store. “You can’t win unless you buy a ticket. But whether you buy one or 10 or 20, it’s insignificant.”

Seema Sharma doesn’t seem to think so. The newsstand employee in Manhattan’s Penn Station purchased $80 worth of tickets for herself. She also was selling tickets all morning at a steady pace, instructing buyers where to stand if they wanted machine-picked tickets or to choose their own numbers.

“I work very hard — too hard — and I want to get the money so I can finally relax,” she said. “You never know.”

CBS4’s Peter D’Oench reported exclusively that the announcement came Saturday night at the 20^th Annual Law Enforcement Awards Gala held by the PBA at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa

The 35-year-old Saavedra made history. It was the first time in 20 years that someone in law enforcement was twice named Officer of the year by the PBA. Saavedra was named PBA Officer of the Year in 2004.

Saavedra drew a huge ovation from hundreds of officers attending the Gala. The PBA said Saavedra was honored for his “clear thinking and courage under fire during a shoot-out at a suspected grow house,” that occurred at a Southwest Miami-Dade home on July 31^st of last year.

“This job is a passion,” said Saavedra. “It’s what I choose and what I dreamed of doing. It’s a very difficult job. It’s an occupation that comes with a lot of danger and we all know what we’re getting into when we join the police department.”

Saavedra told D’Oench, “I can’t wait to get back to work. It means a lot. Helping the community is what I love doing and I can’t wait to return to what I was doing.”

Saavedra was one of 11 finalists for Miami-Dade PBA Officer of the year.

Saavedra was captured on surveillance tape approaching the suspected grow house and then questioning suspect Luis Estevanell after he began to shout “Police! Police!” in what Saavedra said was an attempt to alert other subject at the home.

The tape shows Gerard Delgado firing at Saavedra and an F.B.I. special agent and other officers. Saavedra returned fire and continued to do so, even as he lay wounded on the ground. He also said Estevanell stomped on him as he was on the ground.

Saavedra was able to drag himself across a street and call a dispatcher.

Delgado was shot and killed. Estevanell was taken into custody and charged with 2^nd degree murder because of the death of Delgado, the attempted murder of a police officer, possession of cocaine and trafficking in marijuana.

Delgado was denied bond after a hearing that ended Wednesday and which included Saavedra’s dramatic testimony about this incident.

PBA President John Rivera said of Saavedra, “He’s an incredible man. It goes to show you how important our survival training is.”

Miami-Dade Police say they found 80 pounds of marijuana worth $90,0000 at the suspected grow house near Coral Way and Southwest 60^th Court.

Saavedra told D’Oench he still has nerve damage in his bladder and stomach from the two bullets that struck him in the stomach.

“One went in and out and another bullet went across my abdomen. I also still had a bullet lodged in the left side of my hip,” said Saavedra.

Saavedra is an 11-year veteran of the police department. He’s gone through many surgeries and hopes to return to work within the next three weeks.

He said it is a miracle that he is alive. After the shooting, he told his daughter, “God loves cops. Daddy is going to be OK.”

Saavedra told D’Oench that he hopes to return to undercover work.

“This job is a passion,” he said. “It’s what I chose and what I dreamed of doing.”

Other PBA Police Officer of the year finalists included: Jodlyn Antoine of North Miami Police, Lt. Joe Gonzalez, Sgt.

Jorge Rodriguez and Officers Ruperto Peart and Juan Gonzalez, Jr., of Miami-Dade Police, Sgt. Domingo Martinez and Detectives Martin Moraitis and Orlando Lopez of Miami-Dade Police, Officer Alexander Rosario of West Miami Police and Officer Otoniel Fernandez of North Miami Police.

Miami-Dade Correctional Officer Vidal Perez was named 2012 Correctional Officer of the Year. Miami-Dade Police Detective Orlando Lopez received the 2012 Arthur E. Felton Investigative Excellence Award and South Miami Police Officer Agustin Rodriguez received the 2012 Rookie Police Officer of the Year.

The event marked the PBA’s 50^th Anniversary. The PBA represents more than 6500 law enforcement officers.

Miami-Dade Police Department Director J.D. Patterson received the Fred Maas Outstanding Law Enforcement Leadership award which the PBA said “embodies what it takes to be a true leader, thus serving as a model for others to follow.”

And seven-year-old A’Nari Taylor received the 2012 Citizen of the Year. She was honored for her bravery as the PBA said she “fought off a man who was trying to kidnap her cousin.”

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a private charter bus fatally struck a woman in terminal 4 of the arrivals area at FLL.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said the woman was a passenger in an SUV.

According to Jachles the SUV stopped in a travel lane and the woman got out to greet someone arriving at the airport.

“As she was getting back into the vehicle it appears she tripped and fell under the wheels of the bus,” said Jachles.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said 12 passengers and a driver were on board the bus which was headed to Miami so that the passengers could board a cruise. Nobody on the bus was injured.

Jessica Young heard the crash.

Investigators said the woman was one of three people inside the SUV. They are still investigating as to why the vehicle stopped where it did.

Arrivals traffic has been rerouted to the upper level as BSO traffic homicide detectives continue to investigate the accident.

The drawing for the highest Powerball in jackpot history, previous record was set at $587.5 million in November of last year, is set to happen Saturday evening and to say that players are excited at the potential may be an understatement.

On Saturday, Coconut Creek Casino was giving away one Powerball ticket to the first 1000 people to arrive. Also, each of those 1000 people received a ticket for a chance to win 500 additional Powerball tickets.

The Powerball drawing to win the $600 million will take place Saturday night.

Oxbow led from start to finish. It was the sixth Preakness victory for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and 15th Triple Crown win, the most in horse racing history.

“I get paid to spoil dreams,” Lukas said in an interview with NBC moments after the race.

Orb finished fourth. The Kentucky Derby winner was a 3-5 favorite in Saturday’s race, but he became another casualty of starting on the rail in the Preakness. Since 1950, only two horses have won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown from the No. 1 post position.

Orb’s five-race winning streak ended on an overcast, windy day at Pimlico Race Course. The brown colt had not lost since Nov. 24.

Oxbow was coming off a sixth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, where he made a move for the lead in the final turn but faded.

In the Preakness, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens took control at the outset and never relinquished the advantage.

Oxbow covered the 1 3/16th miles in 1:57.54. He went off as a 15-1 underdog and paid $32.80, $12 and $8.80.

Itsmyluckyday finished second and paid $7.80 and $5. Mylute paid $5.20 to show.

Mylute, with Rosie Napravnik in the saddle, came in fifth in the Kentucky Derby. Racing at the track where she earned her first career victory, Napravnik was attempting to become the first female jockey to win the Preakness.

McCartney’s “Out There” tour requires 31 trucks worth of equipment, including spectacular lasers and lighting, huge pyrotechnics, and state-of-the-art video displays, according to the singer’s website. Set lists include songs from McCartney’s time with the Beatles, Wings and from his solo career.

McCartney performed the show to a sold-out crowd of 55,000 people in Brazil earlier this month, playing “Band on the Run”, “Hey Jude”, “Yesterday” and “Let It Be.” The nearly three-hour show opened with “Eight Days A Week,” which McCartney had previously only played live once with The Beatles in 1965.

He will perform at Orlando’s Amway Center on Saturday and Sunday night. The Orlando Sentinel reports it is McCartney’s only performance in Florida.

At one point during the show, McCartney is raised 20 feet above the stage on a special riser as he performs “Blackbird” and “Here Today” acoustically, according to his website.

The tour will travel across six countries in the coming months.

Earlier this year, McCartney won a Grammy in the best traditional pop vocal album category for “Kisses on the Bottom,” bringing his Grammy tally to 16.

Rebuilding of the bridge that links Key Biscayne and Virginia Key is bound to cause traffic delays, as well as questions of the project’s progress.

Therefore, the contractor is working on setting up a website and implementing a text-messaging system to notify drivers of any changes in traffic patterns, including lane changes, as well as construction updates.

As soon as the website launches, http://www.bearcutbridge.com, the text-message service will also be available.

Once the website is live, which is expected in the upcoming weeks, residents or visitors interested in receiving bridge updates should text “Bear Cut” to 65047.

Catalina Bruno, charged with aggravated manslaughter on a child under 18, was denied bond Saturday morning.

Bruno was set to appear before a judge in bond court Friday afternoon but was reset for Saturday morning.

Miami-Dade Homicide detectives surrounded Bruno’s home at 1071 SW 150 place in West Miami-Dade to investigate the death her nearly one-year-old son Brian Miguel Osceola Thursday afternoon.

Bruno, according to Miami-Dade County Police, put the baby in a car seat and drove home. Upon arriving home, she got out of the car, and the infant inside the vehicle and went into the house.

Police said Bruno was inside for “an undetermined amount of time,” but that the father, Amos Osceola, would later ask where the child was.

At that point, Bruno said she had not taken the infant out of the car and that he was still in the car.

Police said Osceola ran to the car and found the baby unresponsive and still in the car seat. Osceola pulled the child out of the car and ran him to a nearby fire station.

CBS4 cameras captured a detective escorting Bruno from the home into an unmarked car before driving away.

Miami-Dade Police said the mother confessed after being read her rights and was taken into custody on the aggravated manslaughter charge.

The Department of Children and Families said there is a history with the family and court documents show Bruno has a prior charge of child neglect without harm and DUI accompanied by a minor.

Neighbors told CBS4 news the couple has two other children, but it’s unclear where they are at this time.

Dr. Stephen Anthony, over a period of 10-months, wrote more than 12,000 oxycodone prescriptions and over 5,700 for Xanax through an urgent care center, according to reports.

On Friday, the doctor entered his pleas to conspiring to illegally dispense the pills, as well as evading over $550,000 in taxes, using the money for lavish purchases such as jewelry and expensive cars.

Anthony was connected to Vincent Colangelo, who previously pleaded guilty to several charges arising from his operation of six Broward County pills mills.

Nothing seems to be doing that for the Marlins.

Arizona looks to build on one of its best offensive performances of the year and extend light-hitting Miami’s losing streak to seven Saturday night.

The Diamondbacks (24-18) tied a season high with three home runs in a 9-2 victory in Miami on Friday night. Their nine runs and 16 hits were both one shy of season highs.

“I just hope we can do this more often,” manager Kirk Gibson said. “It would sure help our pitching staff.”

Gibson’s team had only three homers over the previous seven games while scoring 16 runs.

The Diamondbacks have had no such problems in Miami lately. They’ve won seven of eight there while averaging 7.4 runs and batting .317 with 10 homers and 20 doubles.

Paul Goldschmidt will look to stay hot and take advantage of a Marlins staff which has let opponents hit .340 during a six-game losing streak. Coming off a three-game set against Atlanta in which he batted .545 with five extra-base hits, Goldschmidt homered in each of his first two at-bats Friday and finished 4 for 5 with four RBIs.

“Watch the kid, watch the way he stays with his approach, he’s dangerous,” Gibson said of Goldschmidt, who has six homers and 13 RBIs in his last four road games.

Third baseman Eric Chavez also enters Saturday on a tear. He tallied four hits Friday, including his first home run since April 29, and is batting .486 in May with nine RBIs in 11 games.

It seems no one is swinging a hot bat for Miami (11-31). The Marlins have combined for 11 runs while batting .219 during the six-game skid, which matches a season high.

With key bats like Giancarlo Stanton, Logan Morrison, Donovan Solano, Casey Kotchman and Chris Valaika all sidelined, the Marlins depend on production from players like Justin Ruggiano, who is 3 for his last 29 with 10 strikeouts.

Hoping to take advantage of Miami’s struggles is Brandon McCarthy (0-3, 5.63 ERA), who is looking to avoid going a career-high 10th straight start without a victory.

The right-hander deserved to win Sunday following his best start of the season, shutting out Philadelphia for eight innings, but Arizona went on to lose 4-2 in 10 innings. He had surrendered three-plus runs in each of his prior seven starts.

“The disappointment is us not getting a win,” said McCarthy, who hasn’t won since Aug. 31. “I really don’t care if I don’t get a win. It’s an inconsequential stat.”

Miami’s Tom Koehler (0-1, 3.31) is looking for his first major league win, having lost his only two previous starts.

The right-hander was used out of the bullpen after being called up from Triple-A New Orleans on April 19, throwing 7 1-3 scoreless innings over his first four appearances. In his last three games, however, he has given up six runs and 10 hits over nine innings while striking out just two.

His first start of 2013 came Sunday, contending with baserunners in every inning but giving up just two runs in five innings of a 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I don’t feel much different than if I would have been starting consistently,” Koehler said. “So I guess that’s a good sign, and now I can build off it.”

Koehler threw a career-high 79 pitches in that game, so it seems unlikely he’ll provide much rest for a Marlins bullpen which has gone at least three innings in seven straight games. Three Miami relievers combined to throw six innings Friday.

The car, according to police, had four people inside when it charged through the sliding glass doors of the apartment located at 7770 NW 78^TH avenue in Tamarac.

It appears that the driver of the car was trying to park but instead accelerated, jumped the parking block, and drove into the apartment.

Neighbors said they heard a loud explosion.

“It was a huge explosion and I told my daughter and my grandson and I said let’s get out of here,” said Cesar Gomez, an upstairs neighbor.

Broward Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the accident.

Nicole Muxo, a senior at Archbishop Coleman Carroll, posted a video she on YouTube asking Wade to be her date, but she says she never expected him to actually show up.

Just before 9:30 p.m.,  the Heat star arrived. He said it wasn’t the first time she’d asked him to a dance, but this time her persistence paid off.

“She continued to go for it no matter how many times I told her i’m going to be busy she continued asking if I’m going to come,” he said.

The entire crowd cheered as Wade arrived on the dance floor.

“I was so surprised. I didn’t expect it at all,” said Nicole. They took pictures together and danced.

Her date Laurent Chaumin was a good sport about the whole thing and joked with Wade.

“At least we both know how to dress,” he said.

Nicole says the night was unforgettable. “I’m going to remember it forever. This was definitely the highlight of my senior year.”

Sometimes you know something’s wrong, like Erika Jordan.

“I had no energy,” she said. “I wanted to take naps during the day. I was cold all the time.”

Sometimes you don’t.

Radio personality Lisa Dent didn’t notice anything.

“I think as working women, we’re always tired and you don’t really notice those symptoms,” she said.

It wasn’t until a routine checkup and blood test that doctors prescribed medication for her under-active thyroid.

“There’s definitely been a difference,” said Dent. “But it’s something that I have to monitor all the time.”

Your thyroid is located in your neck just below your wind pipe. You may never even notice it.

In fact, each year an estimated 15 million people living with thyroid disorders will go undiagnosed.

“I can’t tell you how many girlfriends I have that have a thyroid problem,” Dent said.

Dr. Tricia Moo-Young said more people are being diagnosed with thyroid disorders.

“Absolutely, without question,” she said.

A disease that used to affect women at around 50 is striking some as early as their 20s.

“It could be that as doctors because we know it’s more prevalent, we’re screening for it more routinely,” says Moo-Young. “Or there could be an environmental or exposure risk that’s causing it.”

Risks include everyday chemicals in cosmetics or pesticides, and even stress.

Dr. Moo-Young said under-active thyroid–or hypothyroidism–is by far the most common disorder. It’s usually revealed with a simple blood test or ultrasound, although sometimes you can just spot it.

Jordan said it was her appearance that got her to the doctor.

“It was my overgrown neck,” she said. “My neck was getting puffy, and I had this weight gain, and I was working out and eating right.”

Jordan discovered she had a goiter, an enlarged thyroid that required surgical removal.

She was reluctant. But Dr Moo-Young was persuasive, and she had the surgery. She now takes medication once a day.

How has it changed her life?

“My day is great. My energy level is high. No cold hands and feet. And the weight loss is fantastic,” said Jordan.

Each year, an estimated 15-million people living with thyroid disorders will go undiagnosed but it’s important to remember that most thyroid problems can be managed well if properly diagnosed and treated.

However, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office, people are taking that ride several times a day, almost every day, in Broward County.

Critically injured patients are flown at speeds of up to 140 miles-per-hour to the emergency room. Flight medics say half of the victims they fly are conscious and aware of their injuries while the other half, they said, are unconscious.

Doctors often refer to the first hour after a traumatic injury as “the golden hour” or the most vital 60 minutes for someone to get the help they need for the greatest chances of survival.

“That patient needs to be in surgery within an hour’s time,” said BSO Capt. Mike Kane.

Kane and other BSO flight medics have taken the concept of “the golden hour” one step further.

According to air rescue medics, their goal time in a life-threatening transport is seven minutes. Kane, who has been with BSO for 20 years next month, 15 of them as an air rescue medic, believes that seven is the magic number.

“From touch-down on a scene, to lift-off with a patient to the ER, our goal is not to be on the ground any longer than seven minutes,” said Kane.

The air rescue teams are on duty for 24-hours, and then off for rest.

Capt. Kane is married with 3 children. As a father, he said he is reminded that every patient he and his team transports is special.

“There is a day that doesn’t go by where I don’t reflect upon that and actually see my children’s eyes in the faces of a lot of these patients we transport,” said Kane.

Air rescue is launched to a scene when traumatic injuries are reported in the furthest corners of the county and when it seems that ground transport to the hospital will exceed 20-minutes.

“On a busy day we can transport upwards of three or four patients on our shift,” said Capt. Kane.

Calls for air rescue are called-in on police radio and a digital pager system, within seconds of the call an alert siren sounds in the BSO Aviation Hangar.

“We’re always waiting for the next call to happen,” Kane said. From children, to the elderly, the Captain said he’s attended to them in the sky, for the fast trip to the hospital.

“When that siren goes off, your heart rate goes from zero to 100 in an instant,” he said.

Deputy Carl Spear is a 10-year veteran of the skies for BSO. While Captain Kane is attending to a patient in the back, Deputy Spear is focused on piloting the six million dollar helicopter as safely and quickly as possible to one of Broward’s three major trauma centers.

“As pilots, we try not to get too involved with the patients, to keep our focus,” said Dep. Spear.  “I’ve worked the road, and SWAT, but, by far, this is the most rewarding assignment.”

On the air rescuers job, the clock is always ticking and lives hang in the balance.

“Success has many fathers, and so does saving lives,” said Capt. Kane.

“We’re all links in this life saving chain, from the pilot, to the flight medics, to the first responders on the scene of an accident, all the way to the team at the ER.”

“We couldn’t go anywhere. We woke up this morning and we walked out the door and there were no wheels,” said Pinecrest resident Kim Kaskel.

While Kaskel and her husband slept Thursday night, thieves stole all four rims and tires from her Infiniti, and her husband’s BMW. Both were parked in front of their Pinecrest home.

“It was like floating in air actually,” Bill Kaskel said. “There was no tire. It was just sitting on these blocks.”

“I felt kind of victimized that they are right in front of the house,” said Kaskl. “We didn’t hear anything, we have a dog and nobody saw anything.”

Several months ago a group of tire-jackers committed the same crime just a block away. They ripped rims and tires worth $20,000 off a Porsche and Mercedes.

“Kind of scary that you’re sleeping and this is going on,” said the victim Ana Cordero. “Obviously everything was orchestrated; they’re pros at what they were doing.”

The Corderos had surveillance cameras, but even that didn’t stop the thieves.

“It’s really astonishingly scary because when we see what happened, for us, it’s new and also it’s so close to the house where this occurred,” Patrick Cordero explained.

Pinecrest, Coral Gables and surrounding areas have received several similar reports.

“They’re targeting high end rims on vehicles,” said Detective Alexandra Martinez with Pinecrest Police. “They’re casing the area and once they identify the rims that they want they move very quickly.”

Pinecrest police say it’s unclear if this is an organized crime ring or if any of the thefts are connected.

“In less than 5 minutes they’re on the property, they remove the rims and they leave,” said Detective Martinez. “They come prepared… we believe they may be professionals, maybe in the industry of selling or buying rims.”

If you see something suspicious police ask that you report it right away, because it is easier to catch these crooks in the act.

On Friday, the Kaskel’s were cleaning out their garage to make sure they have a safe place for their cars.

“You never think it’s going to happen,” Bill Kaskel said. “We leave it out here all the time. But it does happen all around unfortunately.”

William Cazanas and his 13-year-old son Will had launched from Loxahatchee Everglades Tours in Parkland early Friday afternoon. About a dozen miles into their voyage, the airboat began to malfunction.

The father and son were stranded for several hours in the hot sun somewhere in the middle of a river of grass.

Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue came to their rescue, loaded them onto their rescue airboat, and brought them back to dry land.

Before the two were rescued, they had to wait for BSO.

According to father Will, he said the trouble began when, “I let my son drive. That’s what happened. He got up on the tall grass and the boat went up and the back went down and it doesn’t take much. You see how low we are to the water? And the next thing we know we’re stuck in two feet of water. We ain’t going nowhere, you know.”

About 12 miles from land, Cazanas called his wife Debbie for help. She knew that time was ticking and to find the two men in the dark was going to be a difficult task.

Once BSO found the men, they gave them supplies, like a radio, sunblock, water.

Debbie said her husband is a West Palm Beach Police Officer and her son is almost an Eagle Scout, so she knew the two of them were capable of handling themselves.

While waiting for the rescue, the father and son said they heard and saw alligators around them and were also getting concerned about nagging mosquitoes.

The father and son said they have no qualms about heading back out into these waters again.

According to BSO, the men had a happy ending because they knew what they were doing, they had charged cell phones and could give out their GPS coordinates.
