It was a packed house. Lots of fans showed up to hear Wendy speak about her new book, "Ask Wendy ."

Wendy was very sweet and funny, she signed autographs after taking questions from their audience. 

The embarrassing thing was that my friend reserved us seats by contacting Books & Books and we were the only ones who did that. So we literally had the front row center seats. I didn't want to sit there at first, I felt foolish, but I was sort of forced into it and I'm glad I was. I was feet away from Miss Wendy the whole time!

We met people who drove down from Tampa and Port St. Lucie just for this event! No matter where you go, this is the topic of conversation and the interesting part is that so many people have seen her/them. But no one does anything. She's like a ghost. Her name is Bamby by the way, and the police are quite familiar with her.

Apparently she and her gang were living at the Metrorail Station, this alone should have thrown up a red flag, the police knew about it but nothing was done. When finally the police surrounded the Metrorail Station, the gang fled and took up "residence" in the center Coconut Grove neighborhoods. It pushed them inside the Grove.

They are drug heads according to those who know, they steal things and resell them to fences, which are part of the problem.

There is this other guy who lives behind one of the hair salons, they let him live there. The guy goes out on his bicycle in the day, burgles stores, lots of times it's CVS and he goes around on his bicycle and sells the stuff to people, mostly to the employees at stores in the Grove. They think nothing of paying $5 for a $200 item, they don't ask questions and the guy goes on his merry way.

Crooks -- all of them, the ones stealing and the ones buying the stolen stuff.

The other day a friend drove by in her car, she beeped, I walked over to say hi, when I left the cop behind her gave her a ticket for that. Today I was stopped by  friend as I came out of the gym, he also paused in the street and we talked a bit. Luckily a cop wasn't behind him or he would have been ticketed.

Is this what the police resources are being used for? We're a little village for god's sake, we are going to stop and say hello to each other in the street.

We need a photo of the Little Red Headed Creep and fast so that people can know exactly what she looks like before she gets wize and dyes here hair to another color, like blue or something. She was seen at Flanagans, at a gallery, at a shoe store, at so many places. The girl with the bright red hair and her gang have hit the Center Grove now. A business owner saw the red headed girl and a tall boy come into their store last night. They had two other young white males with them. They attempted to take things from the store, but the sales associate yelled out to them and they rapidly left.

If anyone has any sort of surveillance system, perhaps you can check and see you capture their images around your store.

They had been hitting houses in the North Grove but now apparently are going into stores.

If you see anything, please call the police at 911 or 305-579-6111 (for non emergency).


UPDATE: On Friday, midday, this girl with the red hair and tattoos, tried to break into a house in Silver Bluff near SW 27 Avenue and 25 Terrace. A neighbor confronted her and she took off on her bicycle. She was with two white guys, one had a silver pick up truck and the other rode off with her on a bicycle.

Someone somewhere must have pictures taken with their home or store security cameras!

The Miami Children's Chorus showcases the diversity and artistic excellence of our South Florida youth in "Let The Children Sing." This exciting program marks the completion of the MCC 2012-2013 season and will feature all three MCC ensembles performing traditional and contemporary multicultural choral works in English, Spanish, Shona, French, and Czech, with a cappella singing, chamber orchestra, and percussion ensemble.

Repeating what was posted the other day: There have been a bunch of burglaries in the North Grove in recent days. Houses on Swanson, Lincoln, Calusa and Jefferson have been hit, and Palmetto, in the Center Grove was also burglarized.

A young couple was witnessed at the scenes, they are between the ages of 17 and 20. She has straight hair, shoulder length which is bright red, he has dark short hair, they ride bikes or a kick scooter.

The police and Public Service Aides are aware of the incidents and CSI has taken fingerprints. Hopefully a police sketch will be out soon.

We may not have fireworks at Peacock Park this year. Nothing is definite at this point, but it looks as if the Chamber of Commerce is out of the fireworks business. And I can't say that I blame them, for one thing, not many people knew the Chamber was putting on the event and another thing, it wasn't really put  on too well because it lacked funding. So it was a thankless job for the Chamber.

In the past, the Chamber tried to make money on the event by selling beer and drinks and hosting food vendors, which were few and far between. The best year was when there were food trucks, but the Grove is so prejudiced against the trucks, that they won't be back, so a few vendors are set up and it really doesn't matter because people bring their own picnics, which I don't blame them for either.

It all came down to the fireworks which were not really appreciated by the crowds because they felt they were too short. Figures go from about 9 to 12 minutes, but at $1000 a minute as the cost, it wasn't much.

One other event that has disappeared is the Coconut Scavenger Hunt, that was a lot of fun, but it ended up all falling on my shoulders and I've been going up north for July 4th week these past couple of years, so there is no Coconut Hunt any more, as all of my helpers, and there used to be plenty, have all flown the coop. In the last year or so, we didn't even paint the coconuts, we used the left over ones, but I was stuck lugging them around, making up the clues then physically hiding them early on July 4th morning, which took hours. 2011 was the last year.

For a couple of years we had the fire shows and cirque du soleil shows with Cirque du Grove. Those were held the whole 4th of July weekend.

2010 may have been the peek year for 4th of July in Coconut Grove, even Lucie and Desi Arnaz Jr. where here! There was something going on from morning to night.

CocoWalk still has the hot dog eating contest and The Barnacle still has their old fashioned picnic, but the two big events, the Coconut Hunt and the Fireworks seem to be a thing of the past, although as I said, maybe not the fireworks, there is hope that the City of Miami will bare the cost and throw the show, but with other fireworks put on by the City, like in downtown at Bayside, and with Coral Gables and Key Biscayne putting on fireworks shows, I don't see it happening here unless a group steps up and takes the event on.

It is expensive at $1000 a minute, this is a great business. we read about high tech jobs, this is a high priced techno job. The BID has offered $8000 to the Chamber to put on the event, but the Chamber pays $50,000 or more for the whole park event with music, food, drinks and fireworks and they don't really reap any rewards. I brought up the fact that the Chamber should do it just for the sake of keeping the tradition alive, but that's easier said than done.

So right now, it's not sure if we'll have fireworks in Peacock Park this year. Above you see our Grove Spider-man, Shaun, he isn't even around anymore. So much is changing in the Grove that made this place the Grove. I do hope the US flags go up in June before Flag Day as they usually do. Participate in the whimsical parade down Old Cutler Road from 8:30 to  9:30 am, then spend the day at Fairchild from 9:30 am to  4:30 pm to join in fun activities like the butterfly costume contest, live music and butterfly viewings. Tasty treats are provided by the Glasshouse Café and food trucks.

Make sure to visit the Wings of the Tropics exhibit to marvel at the thousands of vibrantly colored butterflies swooping overhead. Admission is free for parade participants, Fairchild members and children 5 and under, $25 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and up, and $12 for children 6-17.  

The Butterfly Migration Parade begins at 8:30 am at the entrance of the neighboring Matheson Hammock Park. The road will close to vehicular traffic from approximately 8:15 to 9:45 am until all the participants have entered Fairchild. Led by Grand Marshall Isabelle Scott, Miss Miami United States 2014, a cavalcade of colorful floats, decorated cars, musicians, dancers and performers will proceed down Old Cutler Road. Be sure to spot familiar faces from the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and the Coral Gables City Commission as they make their way down the path. 

After the parade, visitors can enjoy fun butterfly-themed activities, food trucks and live music at Fairchild. The Wings of the Tropics butterfly exhibit in The Clinton Family Conservatory will be fluttering with motion throughout the day. Don’t forget to spread your wings and wear your best outfit for the butterfly costume contest at 11 am.

The Forum is free to attend and will be held at the Frankie Rolle Center (3750 S. Dixie Hwy.) in Coconut Grove. 

Panelists from across the non-profit, local government, and private sectors will guide participants on a series of topics that cover community and leadership issues. Among the distinguished panel of speakers is David Lawrence Jr., Chair of The Children’s Movement of Florida.

“The Community Leadership Forum is one part of our ongoing series of workshops that seek to bring together residents from all over Miami-Dade County to exchange ideas and learn ways they can be active leaders in the development and change of their communities,” says Ryan Shedd, Leadership Training Coordinator for NHSSF. “After participating in several of our Community Leadership Training events, our community partners have gone on to establish neighborhood associations, service organizations, and advocacy groups!”

In partnership with The Collaborative Development Corporation, the Forum will guide 100 South Florida residents through a series of activities and workshops, including leadership training, self-exploration and skills assessment, management skills, and their understanding of community issues and policies. A special focus of the Forum is to provide training to residents of Miami-Dade’s diverse urban core neighborhoods, including Liberty City, Brownsville, Little Haiti, Wynwood, Allapattah, Overtown, and West Coconut Grove, to capture their interest in becoming more effective leaders within their communities.

This threw up a red flag in my mind.

To that I say, there is plenty going on in Peacock Park. It's called Nature. We don't need anything else to be going on there. If the restaurant is good enough, people will come. Look at Peacock Garden Cafe. It's hidden between the hotel and a grave site and library, yet it is one of the most popular restaurants not only in Coconut Grove, but dare I say Miami?

But I doubt anything more commercial would be added to the park simply because of the neighbors next door at The Cloisers. They rubbed people the wrong way over the years with their complaints of noise in the park and wanting their own personal traffic light on Main Highway. But to be honest, in this case I don't see them going for commercialization in the rest of the park which is next door to their residences. They can barely tolerate the events that take place there now -- the Arts Festival, Taste of the Grove, Christmas festival, soccer games, beer festivals, etc. So I am sure they are going to want to keep out anything more than a small restaurant in there.

But we keep talking about a restaurant. The place is really not set up for a restaurant now. While the city is willing to bear the cost of a grease trap and oven hoods, etc. Some other business may come in with a better idea and it could possibly not be a restaurant.

I have to laugh over one thing. So many people who probably never set foot in the park unless there is a large event going on, are so up in arms about what happens there. A young couple was witnessed at the scenes, they are between the ages of 17 and 20. She has straight hair, shoulder length which is bright red, he has dark short hair, they ride bikes or a kick scooter.

The police and Public Service Aides are aware of the incidents and CSI has taken fingerprints.

This reminded me of what I saw last week right here in Coconut Grove.

I was in my car, stopped at the light at 27th and Aviation, facing the BP station, going west. I watched as the bus came down the block, from the US1 direction and it raced by a guy who was trying to board it! They guy was at the BP station under a tree, trying to stay out of the hot sun, as the bus approached, he came out to the street with plenty of time and put his hand up to stop the bus. The bus just kept on going!

I know the driver saw him, there was no way not to see him. But apparently the bus driver felt that the dude should be standing at attention waiting for the bus and not run out from the shade to catch the bus. I tried to get the number of the bus to report it, but he was too busy illegally speeding down SW 27 Avenue for me to get the info.

What the hell is wrong with people? What's with all the road rage?

Ever try to cross the street from the Coconut Grove Bank parking lot to get to the Bookstore or anywhere on Florida Avenue? It's a game in futility trying to dodge cars speeding down Mary Street. There is no courtesy, no one lets anyone cross the street, you can stand out there all day, and not one car will stop or slow down to let people cross.

Many people enjoy the comments, many don't. Many don't like anonymous comments but many anonymous comments are quite interesting. Some people tell me that they won't read the Grapevine if there are comments, although I always wonder what possesses them to click that "comments" button and read if they don't like them.

I read a lot of online publications and I honestly don't read the comments. I don't know why, maybe I just don't have the time.
When I changed the format and stopped anonymous comments, there literally were no comments for months! People couldn't figure out how to comment with the codes and all and the stories just lay there. Interestingly enough, when I post the stories to Facebook, there are plenty of comments because it's easy to do.

For a couple of years, I completely stopped the comments totally, but I do feel that they add to the stories.

So anyway, I am going to be moderating the comments more closely and the ones that are rude and don't add to the stories won't make it through. I try not to censor things, but some comments really are turning people off and they really are rude.

I can block a person's ISP and they won't know it, to them it appears as if their comment is going through, so please forgive me if your ISP is blocked by mistake, but let's be civilized here. I really am trying to be nice in my writing and that should really set the tone for intelligent conversation without the rude people butting in, who by the way, can't spell and don't know grammar. What's that Abraham Lincoln saying? "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Two rival country clubs, Quail Valley and Crouching Squirrel, prepare for their annual grudge match. A massive private wager is made between the two CEOs just before the best player switches teams. Maggie James was memorialized on Friday night with a big party in her honor at Berries in the Grove. Maggie requested the party rather than a sad wake. She passed away a week before.

Maggie always had a smile on her face and she was involved in so many Coconut Grove events from the King Mango Strut to so many gallery openings and showings. You know I always believe the orbs that show up in photos are people. Well if you look to the very right of this photo, you'll see one orb trying to get in the picture. I think that's Maggie at her own party.


In 2008, AnnaMaria Windish-Hunt had a special Christmas gift for so many of us. It was a personalized piece of art, we were each set in our own element. Maggie was one of the Village People, equating her with being one of the Grove's village people. You can see my piece here, just so you can get an idea of what the project was about. Maggie was a part of those fun years when every day seemed like a holiday in the Grove.

Hotels and restaurants in the downtown area of course benefited the most.

Unlike many suspected, the crowds did spend money and spent it outside of Bayfront Park before, during and after the event. Only two emails of complaint came into the Bayfront Park Trust about the noise and crowds.

While it did shut down most of downtown Miami those two weekends, it was well worth it in this poor economy. Tim Schmand, the Trust CEO said overall there was a $1.1 million increase in assets. He went on to say that Ultra contributed $1.2 million to to the park Trust.

In Coconut Grove, the major benefit of large events is the trickle down to the local businesses. During the King Mango Strut or Bed Race or 4th of July events, the goal is to bring crowds in who in turn spend money locally, whether it be just for the day at stores and restaurants or at hotels for the weekend.

For the condo owners in the downtown area who don't really care for large events in Bayfront Park, it was explained that the events pay for the upkeep of the park. Six artists were given old fire helmets and vintage fire extinguishers and this is what they came up with. The pieces of art will be auctioned off tonight.

Above, how can you not love this Superman image, which really does tie in with the firefighters as so many of us look at firefighters as super men. Rick Abrams painted this hat. Rick is a graphic designer/artist whose work encompasses a wide range of disciplines including engineering and architectural design. Born and educated in Miami, he currently works out of his studio in DeLand, Florida.

Federico Carosio III, created this helmet that is very abstract with layers of different acrylic colors. Federico is a self-taught artist whose work captures the intense light and rich colors of South Florida like no photograph can. Carosio’s eye for detail can be seen in the photo-realism of his early pop-art paintings, while his abstracts and sculptures reflect the bold colors of his native Colombia. 

Ed King, created the black helmet with the bright orange flames and hearts. Many of you know Ed from his many showings in the Grove from small galleries to the Coconut Grove Arts Festival. Since 2003, the award winning neo-pop artist has been living his dream of creating fun and inspiring artwork for clients all over the world. His use of vibrant colors, black outlines, and his signature stitching has won over the hearts and minds of people everywhere.

Nick Varsalona painted the patriotic fire extinguisher at left and Marcy created the fire extinguisher with the dalmatian, at right.Nature inspires Nick. "The diversity of flora and fauna on this planet have always fascinated me. Whether my work is commissioned-based or personal, I always incorporate the element of nature. I've always tried to capture the subtle/bold differences of objects within the composition in an effort to understand and appreciate each entity's uniqueness. "

Nick was born and raised in Miami and continues to reside here. He began to paint and draw when he was about 3 years old, and attended various prestigious magnet schools. After graduating from New World School of the Arts, he went on to earn his BFA degree at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD.
Marcy is a visual artist, from passionate dancers caught in mid-swing to a pulsing salsa beat, Marcy's work is quite eclectic. Her life and art embody the bridging of traditional Cuban culture and modern American dynamism: Literate in the romantic Spanish sentiments of the past, yet comfortably situated in the unaccented English currents of contemporary Miami.

Jacqueline Roch created the blue helmet with Koi fish. I always remember Jacqueline as being one of my favorite Coconut Grove Arts Festival poster painters. She did the mango poster for the 2009 festival.

Born in Los Angeles, California to Argentinean parents, she was raised in Miami Beach and attended Dade County Public Schools and was one of the first talent magnet program graduates. As a child she was formally trained in traditional oil painting by local Miami Beach artist Angela Sanchez. I had been going back and forth with one of the producers suggesting that after all these years of being in Coconut Grove, that they should have the Grapevine in a scene. You know, they can use our nameplate and Sam or Michael or someone could be reading a headline pertaining to that episode and the Coconut Grove Grapevine would be the publication they would be reading.

It would be a little homage to the Grapevine and also a little inside joke for those that know who we are.

We'll see what happens. In the meantime, that's it for the burned spies around here.

They have been shooting around town and June 6, 2013 is the premier of the final season.

Commissioner Sarnoff was joking at a meeting recently about being the first to be sitting on a bulldozer come November 1, so he could be the first to strike the first blow against the Expo Center. It will be sad to see it go after so much history, but the new condos across the street can breathe a sigh of relief now, they will not have to look at the ugly structure and Coconut Grove's umpteenth park can go in on the land there.

First View / Second Friday happens each month with the opening reception for the month's exhibition. This month's theme is "Papering," at the Audrey Love Gallery at the complex. The exhibition brings together recent artworks from artists working at the Bakehouse. Despite their use of varying techniques and multiple themes, these artists are united by their use of paper as a primary medium.

The exhibit is on view through May 25. And in the Swenson Gallery, on view through June 7, see "The Nature of Silence," works by Gerbi Tsesarskaia and Tina Salvesen. 

Admission for tonight's reception, which will feature wine and live music by composer Liza Seigido, is free for Bakehouse members and $5 for non-members.

Seems that no one wants to pay to advertise.

The Gables Home Page was one of over 20 blogs that were given grant money from the Knight Foundation a few years back, I always questioned why the Grapevine was not part of that group, as many received $100,000 and that would have been a great thing.

“While community support and accolades for the site were strong, advertising sales and funding remained a constant challenge,” said Executive Director Andria Hanley.  Amen to that.

Sounds so familiar. People would stop me daily on the street to ask me to bring the Grapevine back when I had taken that break in September. I honestly had no intention of coming back and truly enjoyed the break from the constant work schedule, but I thought I could make a go of it again if I turned it into a business and not just keep it as a free community service.

The funny thing is that none of the people who asked me to return have come forth with advertising dollars. Now would be a good time to support the Grapevine. Maybe some of the people who advertised in the Gables Home Page could advertise here, too, since we now cover Coral Gables in the Grapevine.

This is not the case with the county. They are quite strict with anything being built in the county.

This is a concern for many regarding Peacock Park. What is to stop something else being added to the park for commercial use? 

I would assume that most people would like parks to remain parks, you know, to remain green, not to be commercialized. While many projects in parks may benefit the city monitarily with the city collecting rents and fees, which offset taxes and other things, it seems that most people would rather have the park than the commercial venture.

There is a petition called "More Parks for Miami Now!" It asks the mayor to collect higher one-time impact fees from developers so that park acerage is aded to Miami, not taken away, as it is so many times.

Had lunch at Acropolis Greek Taverna today. Everything was excellent, the food, service and staff. I highly recommend it.

Tonight, May 8, is their grand "OPA-ning" party, stop by for a drink and some samples and enjoy the atmosphere. Deano Kastis, General Manager and his staff are really great people and a great fit for the neighborhood. The lunch crowd was large today and that seems to be the case daily, with lunch and dinner.

Later this week, they are hoping to open three new places -- Panther Coffee, Tequitzlan Mexican and Ice Box Cafe. Panther Coffee and Ice Box are two of my favs. I met Barbara Streisand at the Ice Box Cafe that was right off of Lincoln Road, where I ate often.

And I love Panther Coffee in Wynwood so much that I almost used a photo of it as a blog name plate here, but was talked out of it because it wasn't in Coconut Grove!

The spaces are much larger than their counter parts. Panther Coffee won't be roasting the beans there like they do in Wynwood, so that's a shame, because the whole setup in Wynwood is what makes it special.

As for the Ice Box Cafe, it is so much larger than the small intimate space that was off Lincoln Road. It also will have a full bar. Ice Box is a fav of many celebs, at least the former space was. Oprah has a favorite cake there, but it's a bit much, it sort of cheese cake wrapped in a chocolate cake, wrapped in somethng else. As they say on Seinfeld, "I'll take an angioplasty with that."

Hoping that these new changes don't affect the ambiance and feel of the other locations.

As for the Mexican place, I am not familiar with it.

Grace wrote to the City Manager asking that the current RFP be voided and rewritten so that it complies and actually quotes Sections 3(f)(iii) and 29-B of the City Charter regarding leasing property and leasing waterfront property.   

As a result, the RFP must state that if a successful bidder is chosen out of three or more applicants (minimum three), and the proposed lease exceeds five years and contains renewal terms, it must go to the city's voters.

Grace says that the current RFP "is defective because it does not include the primary Section of the Charter, Section 3(f)(iii) - 'Waterfront Lands' -  that controls Peacock Park." 

Peacock Park is a waterfront parcel of land covered by only ONE folio, more specifically: 01-4121-061-0010.

This is in the Charter, Section 3(f)(iii) of the Charter:


  (f)   Acquisition and disposition of property and services:
 .     .      .
              (iii)  To lease to or contract with entities for the management
                                   of any of the city’s waterfront property,
                                   but only in compliance with the other
                                   requirements of this charter and on
                                   condition that;
         
                            (A)  the terms of the lease or contract allow
                                       reasonable public access to the water
                                       and reasonable public use of the
                                       property, and comply with other charter
                                       waterfront setback and view-corridor  
                                       requirements; and
         
                            (B)  the terms of the contract result in a
                                    fair return to the city and the terms of a
                                   lease result in a fair return to the city based
                                       on two independent appraisals;  and
         
                            (C)  the use is authorized under the then
                                       existing comprehensive plan of the city; and 
         
                            (D)  the procurement methods prescribed by
                                       ordinances are observed; and

                            (E)   the contract does not exceed five years
                                   and does not contain an automatic renewal
                                   or termination penalty.

                                 Any such lease or contract or proposed extension 
                                 or modification of an existing such lease or contract
                                 which does not comply with each of the above
                                 conditions shall not be valid unless it has
                                 first been approved by a majority of the
                                 voters of the city.
         
                                  Nothing herein contained shall in any manner
                                  affect or apply to any project the financing
                                  of which has been provided by the
                                  authorization of bonds to be issued by the
                                  city.
                  
 As you can see, NO LEASE for City owned waterfront property can exceed FIVE YEARS or can have AUTOMATIC RENEWALS.  However, the RFP released by the City is expressly requesting proposals that would violate Section 3(f)(iii) of the Charter, i.e., one initial terms of TWENTY (20) YEARS, and TWO (2) additional terms of FIVE (5) YEARS.

Grace goes on to say, "The City’s RFP deliberately misleads those who might otherwise not be inclined to submit a proposal if complete and accurate information were disclosed in the RFP. Moreover, it would appear that the City is 'staging' an RFP -- it includes the provision for a referendum if less than three written proposals are submitted. Although 29-B has a referendum requirement, that requirement only kicks in if less than three applicants submit proposals. Having three applicants submit RFPs can be easily manipulated in order to avoid the referendum, as per 29-B. However, Charter Section 3(f)(iii) prohibits leasing City waterfront land that includes a term exceeding five years, includes automatic renewals, and does not return fair value to the City.  Therefore, simply quoting 29-B is not enough. Lots of people are concerned about the place going commercial. Others can't wait for a restaurant to come in. It's going to be an ongoing discussion for quite a while it seems.

I spoke with Ron Nelson, District Commissioner Marc Sarnoff's Chief of Staff. He told me that only one side is available for commercial use, but I think we knew that.  And of course the City still owns the Glass House, it's only leasing part of it for a restaurant or maybe something else.

The side up for RFP is the side facing the water, it's 1900 square feet inside and the outside patio area is 600 square feet, the rest of the 7226 square feet will be used as a community center run by the Parks Department and staffed by at least one person daily, who works for the Parks Department.

As for St. Stephen's they are cleaning up the one area round the glass house, but they have no control over the glass house. For decades, St. Stephen's has used the park as it's own back yard. They paid an annual use permit which was about $153.00. For this small fee they took control of the whole park. Now under the new deal with the city, they are only permitted to use certain areas from 8 am to 3 pm, school days only.

The guy that ran the skateboard park in the back, ran it into the ground. He was given a year to clean it up and run it as a business. He did not conform to the city's demands. He opened only sporadically  it never had set times and it was run down and dangerous, so he lost the skate park.

The new revocable license agreement/use agreement that St. Stephen's signed, is for a period of 10 years. Currently St. Stephen’s renews an Annual Use Permit each year, which allows them use of the entire park for one year. This new agreement acknowledges their contribution and eliminates the need to renew their annual agreement for 10 years. It is NOT a lease, it conveys NO property rights and it is revocable with 10 day notice. It also limits St. Stephen’s to a small portion of the park during school hours, thus making much more of the park available to the public . This arose when St Stephen’s came asking for some improvements to be made to the park.

They were rightly told that they have used the park for 40 years or more and maybe it is time to give back. They happily accepted that challenge and the result is $500,000 worth of improvements to the park. With these improvements comes the promise from the City to reclaim the NET Office as park space and bring on a full time manager in order to add programming to the park. I love the fact that the City didn't just roll over and fix up the park because St. Stephen's asked for that. I feel that the City did the right thing here.

The basketball court (old shuffleboard) is where a CrossFit/free play surface will be. The existing basketball court next to the proposed soccer fields will be rerurbished. No new hard surface is being added to the park. The school will only have exclusive use of the proposed soccer fields and the adjoining basketball court during school hours. The proposed soccer fields and the adjoining basketball court will be available to the public during all other hours. The open field at the southern end of the park will remain untouched. Currently the school gets a permit to use that field and all other parts of the park during school hours. They will no longer use that field thus making the field even more available for public use than it is currently.

This morning at 10:30 am, there is a ribbon cutting celebration at their new state-of-the-art facility located at 3831 Grand Avenue.

The spa-like facility's staff will welcome community leaders and business partners along with legislators with food and festivites.

Coconut Grove is not one of 10 health care centers and one of 42 school-based centers operated by the federally qualified health center. The non-profit has been providing comprehensive primary and behavioral health care for 42 years.

Insured and uninsurered are accepted. Financial assistance is based on a sliding fee scale.

Services offered include primary care, pediatrics, OB-GYN and there is complimentary transportation. Routine check-ups and immunizations for adults and children are available, along with treatments for cold, flue, etc.

This Gala to raise money for firetrucks. The city currently has an adversely limited amount of fire-rescue trucks, all of which are in extremely poor condition. Each truck costs $250,000.

As part of the event, six artists have been chosen to paint four fire helmets and two vintage fire extinguishers.

Here are a couple of before imgages. I'll show you the finsihed pieces next week after they are completed and ready for the auction. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery is ground zero for the items, they will collect and transport the finished art to the auction.

Because I'm just trying to explain my point of view and not be rude about it.

Yesterday, after I published my piece on my wish to see Shake Shack at the Glass House, I received this anonymous comment:

"Tom, how can you think that selling off public property in a public park to private companies is is any way, shape or form is a good idea? It was built as a community center for the residents of Coconut Grove. The NET offices and Chamber of Commerce took it away from the residents years ago."

He went on: "I feel that you are a voice for the Grove and when you stand up and make suggestions like Shake Shack instead of questioning the wisdom of selling a public park to private investors you ARE supporting and promoting that idea."

My response to that is, I have been questioning the issue for four years now. I have been writing about it and people have been debating it. And while I am not in favor of a restaurant over a community center, what if I was? Why do I need to take his side? Who says, the "voice of the Grove" shouldn't like a restaurant in the space? Who is to say what is right and what is wrong?Again, I did not say I was in favor of a public park being taken over by private companies, in fact, starting in 2009 I was at meetings including one with with the Friends of Peacock Park to question this idea. I don't believe our accuser was at any of those meetings. 

At the time, a friend left a comment under the story I wrote, which stated, "I attended the meeting and felt that unless the residents get involved and ask questions and demand answers Peacock park will have a full service restaurant with a wine and beer license, full catering rights to the park and possibly the park could be eventually privatized."
That comment was published here in the Grapevine in 2009.

Back to our anonymous commenter; I told him I would not debate anonymous people so he kindly revealed his name and said he has been a Grovite since the 1960s, so I suspect most of the changes that have gone on around here have been a thorn in his side. I do have to agree that too much is changing too fast, but to blame the messenger for what is happening at the Glass House is out of line.

I am not here to take sides. I don't have to take his side or anyone's side and I am not going to fight his or anyone else's battles. When the RFP (Request for Proposals) for the Glass House and the proposed restaurant was brought up by me, right here, years ago, where were people then? Why wait till it's too late to fight the issue? The RFP has gone out, that's it.

In my article yesterday about the Shake Shack, I was just answering the question, which was not asked, but I answered, "What type of restaurant would you like to see in the location?" I chose Shake Shack only because if a restaurant goes in, I would like to see something that everyone would use. I passed a bunch of kickball teams in the park yesterday, I am sure that most of these guys and girls would visit the Shake Shack after their games rather than if it was a high end restaurant, which I believe most, if not all, would just bypass after their games. So a restaurant for the masses seems to be what is needed.

Would it be great if a community center went in there. Sure. Would it be great if they knocked down the whole thing and made it a lawn? Yes, why not? Would it be even better if new, clean bathrooms, water fountains and shade was brought in instead? Of course.

This public/private park thing has been going on all over the country. In New York City now, most parks host vendors. Union Square has a large farmer's market most of the year, which runs most of the week, not just weekends, which was the original plan, and in the fall and winter, along with the farmer's market, there is a huge bazaar that takes over a big portion of the park. They start with pumpkins and Halloween items and then it ends up being Christmas trees and Christmas stuff and all the while the farmer's market is going on.

The same people run a holiday bazaar in Brant Park and also inside Grand Central Terminal. Fashion Week tents, an ice skating rink and a carousel in Bryant Park behind the NY Public Library are also a big part of that city park, various times of the year. There are also little snack and ice cream kiosks that dot one area and there are lots of little cafe tables where people eat and hang out. All this was parkland a few years back.

Am I in favor of it? I don't know, I just looked up one day and it was all there. Perhaps the people of New York fought the idea, but it happened. The parks are all commercialized now, whether it's right or wrong.

For more years than many of us have been alive, the Boathouse restaurant has operated in the center of Central Park and on the other side of the park, inside the park, Tavern on the Green operated for many years. This is not just a Miami thing and it's not such a new thing.

And if people are against the Glass House becoming a restaurant on city owned land, let me ask you, do you go to The Fresh Market, Scotty's Landing, Red Fish Grill (at Matheson Hammock) and other places on the waterfront? Did you go to Sundays on the Bay on Key Biscayne in the past? Have you eaten at the restaurant at Black Point Marina or the lighthouse on Key Biscayne? Then you are feeding into the problem. In all of these cases, the businesses are leasing the land from the city, county or state.

And if you don't like the Glass House project, just wait, the future plans for the waterfront where Scotty's and the Chart House is now,  is supposed to one day become Coconut Grove's version of Bayside.  Just like I told you about the Glass House plans four years ago and I repeated the plans many times over the years, I am telling you about the waterfront plan. You know that Starbucks is going in at Monty's, right? Well that could be the start of things to come.

So stop blaming the messenger. I am only here to give you the message, that's it. You need to take it and run with it from here.  I can't stop these projects, I can only inform you about them. And I do right from the beginning. I can't help it if you wait years, until it's too late.For the record, I am against a private, money-making venture taking over city or county owned property to run a restaurant or any other type of business. And yes, I am guilty of frequenting the places that do eventually take over the land for private businesses. Now that the Glass House in Peacock Park is available, this is the perfect restaurant for it. Shake Shack started in a much smaller spot in New York, a shack actually, hence the name. The original is still there at Madison Square Park and Shake Shack has locations in and around Miami, so it's no such a far fetched idea, is it?

Supposedly Johnny Rockets is on its way out, although they seem to be hanging on, but once they are gone, this will be similar, but of course better.

Many people see an elegant restaurant at the Glass House, they see themselves sipping red wine on the veranda, one person told me they would love to see a Tavern on the Green there, but Tavern on the Green isn't even a thing anymore, so why not have something that people will actually use, especially people in the park who will give the place most of the business.

I don't see an upscale place getting enough business all the way on that end. I know, there is Peacock Garden Cafe across the street, but I don't see two places making it at that end. But Shake Shack, that has a captive audience in the park! Kids, parents, everyone who passes by or goes to an event in Peacock Park will stop in from time to time.

Each year, the congregation sets up their art in the great room, where refreshments along with the art are sold. It's right after mass and runs from about 11 am to noon. For the record, I spoke with the owner of Peacock Garden Cafe and they aren't interested and neither is Monty's, both gave me different reasons right to my face, so unless they change their minds in the future, they are out.


The site which housed the NET office at one side and the Chamber of Commerce on the other is now almost vacated. The NET office will move to the former dive shop on Mary Street and the Chamber is moving across the street on McFarlane, at a little place next to Peacock Garden Cafe.

The site, being leased as a "Quaint Garden Cafe/Restaurant/Retail Space can be anything in the end. It appears as if only the one side is up for grabs, only 1900 square feet of the 7226 square feet total. I would assume if a restaurant went in, it would want the side with the coral steps and veranda which overlooks the park and hopefully the water one day if the mangroves are moved. The 1900 square feet is the interior and the exterior space for tables, etc., is 600 square feet.

The space is available in November according to the property for lease form. The City of Miami is presenting it. This is RFP # 12-13-037. July 5 at 2 pm is the deadline for offers. Minimum rent is $4985 per month or a percentage of gross revenues of 4%.

Many people would like to see the whole space become a community center as it had been in the past (this plaque is on the building, showing the dedication in 1968 as a community center), but that doesn't appear to be the case. The Kennedy Park dock received its final County RER inspection and is officially completed, this was through a Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) Grant. The light pole still needs to be installed and the ground around the new walkway needs leveling. The Kennedy Park shoreline stabilization project has started as we reported the other day. Spoil Island E dock is tentatively set for the May 9 City Commission meeting approval.

The preliminary sketches from the Capital Improvements Program (CIP) were reviewed regarding the Tiki huts on the spoil island. The tiki umbrellas and picnic areas were approved as submitted. The committee drew the current trails and picnic tables already in place and usable on the island. The proposed dock and tiki shelter locations were also added to the sketch. In addition, seven new picnic tiki sites were added to the sketch. There should be signage with rules and regulations near the dock. The grant funding for trails should be used on the main trail from the new dock to the two story tiki shelter, which needs to be ADA compliant.

In regards to the Dinner Key dock master building, the idea of reusing the existing building as the marina user area, and building a smaller administration building over the Water and Sewer pump area has issues with the easements and infrastructure. The administration is still looking into the approved new dock master facility as well as the possible reuse of the existing building.

Students from the Gulliver School are interested in working on a master plan for Spoil Island E. Christina Manrique wishes to come before the Waterfront Implementation committee’s June meeting to discuss this project which would start during the fall school year. Harry Horgan from Shake-A-Leg discussed the problems with the floating dock at Spoil Island C. The sand silting the dock area has been increasing, creating more problems for the dock structurally. The final permits for the dredging need to be obtained before work can begin.

Artist Ray Lopez will have his art featured at a show called "Natura," at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery at the Mayfair Atrium. Above is a piece by Ray.

Ray's work combines the ideas of Purism, Realism, and Naturalism together on unconventionally sized canvases. Often finding himself attracted to desolate places, he always finds the composition he is looking for in the outdoors. The majority of the landscapes featured in Natura are painted on location and the beauty of these locations are shown through expressive strokes, washes, paint build up, accurate lighting techniques, weather conditions and time of day. Ray's art not only captures a place at a moment in time, but also shows a deep understanding of that place.

“I want to show my admiration for what is naturally beautiful, in its present state - marred by weather and time,” Ray said.  “I paint what I see in the hope of connecting with someone else’s fond memory of a place, a moment, a transformative experience.”

A Miami-native of Cuban descent, Ray found his love for the arts early on while attending New World School of the Arts, where he graduated with Honors and Distinction.  He received his BFA with Honors in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA in 2008 and he currently shares his creativity and knowledge by teaching full-time at Doral Performing Arts & Entertainment Academy.

On the same day, the Biscayne-Brickell route will be divided in to two separate routes. The free service will continue to run approximately every 15 minutes from 6:30 am to 11:00 pm, Monday through Saturday and 8:00 am to 8:00 am on Sundays. And to all you in Coconut Grove, waste gas, bike it, or take a cab.

The current Biscayne-Brickell route will be divided in to two routes to improve the service:
- This route will continue to go north from the Brickell Metrorail Station, along Biscayne Boulevard, and now to Midtown and the Design District.
- This route will continue to go south from Brickell Key to the Brickell Metrorail Station, terminating at Mercy Hospital, that is as far as it comes into Coconut Grove.

Many good things are happening right now at Kennedy Park.

They are finally removing the non-indigenous, invasive, detrimental plant and tree species and replacing them with indigenous ones. That includes the huge Australian Pines, the infamous Seaside Mahoes, Brazilian Pepper bushes, etc.

There was a comprehensive, official study done about that from accredited arborists a few years ago, which identified such detrimental plants and trees. 945 of them, if memory serves. 

They are also finally trimming the mangroves to open “windows” so we can see the water. Now, you can see the Bay a lot better at Kennedy Park. 

I wish they would do the same a Peacock Park, actually completely remove a few mangroves on the East side, where the boardwalk is, so people can see the Bay, as it was for decades before the 90’s. You could see the Bayside water all the way up from McFarlane Road. We know mangroves are beneficial, but even arborists agree that we are going overboard about that, as one recently told me. There are thousands of “sacred mangroves," as I call them, all over the five miles of blocked bayside water views that we have in Coconut Grove. Sadly, the only place you can see some water along those five miles is Seminole Boat Ramp, a few yards, if you’re walking, biking, or driving by the sidewalks or the road in South Bayshore Drive. Just imagine what better water views from the street would do for tourism and business in the Grove.

At Kennedy Park, they are also planning to open-up kayak launching points, close to Bayshore Drive, west side of the park, out of the “rivers” that come in from the bay through the mangroves.

They have already replanted already numerous grown, nice new trees, as they did on 27th Avenue recently.

He is to the right in this photo. I found out that he passed on last month. He had medical problems including Parkinson's Disease.

I met Sid a few years ago, while I would see him many times during the week, he would go around with the Krishnas every Saturday night blessing people and businesses and that's when I got to know him. He knew me by name and he read the Grapevine, I always liked that he knew my name.

He would stop in AnnaMaria's gallery every week, we looked forward to that. It wasn't a Saturday night until Sid and his friends came around.

One time there was a fashion show at the gallery, there were literally hundreds of people there. It was ok, sort of solemn though, not sure why. All of a sudden Sid and his friends came in and the whole mood of the place turned around. The boring fashion show turned lively and everyone ended up with a smile on their face and that turned the whole mood around for the rest of the evening.

He always had a smile on his face he was a nice man; a real gentleman. Felice at the Bookstore has been telling me about author Beth Dunlop and photographer Claudia Uribe's book, "The Tropical Cottage: At Home in Coconut Grove," which features over 30 Grove cottages.

With all the over development, it's nice to see these quaint, beautiful restorations. They are owned by people you probably see daily around town.

Beth and Claudia will be at the Bookstore in the Grove (3390 Mary Street) on Friday, May 3 for a book signing and Q&A session and many of the locals who are featured in the book will be on hand, too.

Maybe you can also get signatures of the actual folks who are featured in the book! It reminds me of when Arva Moore Parks was presenting her new book on Coconut Grove and many of us featured in the book (see page 126) were signing autographs for each other, as if they were high school yearbooks.

Roger Magolan will be taking photos for his slide show, which is ongoing project at the bookstore. Have you seen it? It runs on the screen behind the cafe counter and it's photos of Grovites and events that have happened at the store. It also featured dogs, classic planes, books and other things.

This is something cool, right on the heels of the Miami Critical Mass Orange Bike-in event is Miami Bike Polo. That is today, Sunday, April 28 at 1 pm at Jose Marti Park.

 This is the second year for Miami Bike Polo which takes place on the basketball courts under I-95 on SW 5th Street, between 3rd & 4th Ave.

Bring food to grill on the BBQ's in the park and bring your own drinks, and snacks if you want. Arrive early if you wish to learn, beginners and spectators are always welcomed.

The large float winded its way through town and hundreds of people came out to cheer or even join in. They usually pick up people along the way who join the parade.

The yearly event is a fun thing, there's lots of color and lots of colorful people.

Saturday's event at the park had lots of music, food, fashion and more and Sunday, it's all repeated again, minus parade, at the Cultural Center at 3220 Virginia Street where there is live music, food, drama, books and more. It's a 12 hour event -- 9 am to 9 pm. Admission is free.

The goal is to encourage appreciation of writing and reading.

La Plume offers students the opportunity to express themselves through a short story based on themes relevant to their grade level. A panel of professional journalists, actors, writers and educators evaluate all submissions. Massimo Tarridas, left, was a Grand Prize winner last year.

A 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner for each level will be selected as well as a Grand Prize per level. Prizes will be awarded to all winners and the Grand Prizes will have their manuscript published. A celebration of all the young authors will include a book signing of the published manuscripts.

Cash prizes and numerous awards will be given to all winners, sponsored by The Bookstore in the Grove, MCA academy and other patrons.

Registration is now open until May 31, 2013. There is a $10 fee to enter. Students will have the summer to write their stories, which must be submitted by August 31, 2013. Awards are presented in November.

Orange was the fashion statement Friday night as Miami's Bike-in Festival meet up with the monthly Critical Mass bike ride. It was a celebration of the Dutch Queen's birthday, orange is the Dutch color.

Danny Lovett, of Revolution Bicycle Services in Coconut Grove, was among the crowd.

Omni Parkwest Redevelopment Association along with The Miami Bike Scene, and Grolsch Premium Lager put on the event which started at Government Center downtown Miami and ended with a big party at Grand Central Park. It was THE event of the year for the bike crowd, anyone who is anyone in Miami's bike scene was there.

Hundreds of t-shirts were given out.

Admission was free but all bar proceeds are going to Grand Central Park for improvements and maintenance to the facility. There was food, drinks, and music provided by DJ DZA for a special "Peachfuzz in the park."

Green Mobility Network provided a free bicycle valet and there were lots more bicycle-related vendors. As you can see, people dressed for the occasion.

Heart of a Chef, the "foodalicious family festival," is a fundraiser for the Florida Heart Research Institute.  The emphasis is on the prevention of childhood obesity along with educating people of all ages to live a heart healthy lifestyle.

The family-friendly event includes food, wine samples, and a cooking demonstration by Ellen Kanner, vegan chef and author of "Feeding the Hungry Ghost: Life, Faith, and What to Eat for Dinner." There will be lots of food vendors on site including EVOS, Frozen Guru, SunMoon Kitchen, Raw One Food, Veggie Xpress, W Organics, and so many more.

The Miami Ratha Yatra Parade is Saturday at noon, the Krishnas will start at their temple at 3220 Virginia Street and come down Virginia Street to Grand Avenue, where they turn onto Grand then onto McFarlane Road and end up in Peacock Park.

This is a great event to watch or participate in.

On Sunday, the Krishnas have their festival at the Cultural Center on Virginia Street where there is live music, food, drama, books and more. Admission is free.

This sounds just like Coconut Grove a few years ago. In the Grove, the police and authorities were called on bar owners who did not toe the line, if they did or said anything that was not appreciated by the establishment, they were raided. If they talked about the 3 am/5 am issue, they were raided. If they looked at anyone crooked they were punished.

One thing that occurred often here was that police cars were sent out to sit in front of the offending establishments all night. They had their lights on and basically scared off business.

Today the Grove still suffers. 

There is also talk about the Wynwood Art Walk getting out of hand (read too successful).

According to the New Times story, bar owners in downtown, who have the police and Commissioner Sarnoff on their side, are going after competition in Wynwood.

Sarnoff in the middle of this? No! Can't be. And our buddy David Collins, former Grove BID Director is the BID Director now in Wynwood. Do they even have a BID in Wyndood? I hope this is not a repeat of what happened in the Grove. This is akin to the City of New York killing SoHo or Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

He wasn't trying samples as people do, every so carefully with their filthy fingers, no this guy was whole fisting gobs of candy from the bins and putting in bags to purchase.

He literally was sticking an open hand into the jars and grabbing what he could and taking it out and putting in bags. I said something to him about what a dirty thing he was doing. He said he didn't realize what he was doing. How stupid can you be?

He ended up in line in front of me with his mother, who looked to be a classy lady and he didn't say anything. As they walked out of the store to their car he never looked back and neither did she, so I am assuming he didn't say anything to her. I was ready for an argument right there at the check out because I thought they were going to confront me. But he was a big boy, a fat boy, in fact, with fat pudgy fingers all in the candy bins. He was partial to the red licorice and jelly beans the most, but he grabbed his fair share from half a dozen bins or so.

This is how plagues are spread, or at least a cold or flu and wouldn't you know it, that I just threw my onion out the night before! I had been sleeping with an onion next to my bed all winter into spring to avoid the flu. You can read why I did that here.

So in the pouring rain I ran back to the car to read the plate, ran back to the meter and punched in the numbers.

This is something new the Miami Parking Authority (MPA) is doing. They request your plate number in order for you to pay for parking.

Many people don't like this, they feel it reeks of Big Brother. Even if you use the pay by phone feature, you're license is being used, so you are sort of being tracked.

Now this can be great for an alibi, but I've been hearing from people that they don't like it. I am not quite sure of the MPA's reasoning, but I see it as a selfish move, as people share the parking slips, you know, if there is time left, people hand the slip off to the next person. I have done this and I'm sure you have, too. I've shared my slip and I've received slips from people.

Now you cannot do it. Someone told me that they were going to punch a fake license number into the machine, fooling the machine, but if the plate number does not match the car, you'll be ticketed.

This is also killing a big business downtown for homeless people who I have seen collect the tickets that are not fully used and they sell them at a discount to people. So now their business is shot.

The award is given to individuals who have contributed significantly to the arts, literature or the advancement of those fields. Brigitte was presented the medal of Knighthood by her good friend and artist, Sam Choueka, at a party attended by her 93-year-old father and friends in Paris in March. That's Sam above with Brigitte. Members of the order include Leonardo DiCaprio, Rudolf Nureyev, George Balanchine, Philip Glass, George Clooney, Tim Burton, Ray Bradbury, Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, Bob Dylan, and T.S. Eliot. Chevaleresse is a female knight.

What's so great about this is that Brigitte is one of the most humble people you will ever meet. She's very soft spoken, a very hard worker and you can see her zooming up the street driving her golf cart almost daily!

Brigitte founded the Miami Conservatory of Music ten years ago, and the MCA academy in 2006 and has produced many musical and literary events including the Fete de la Musique in Coconut Grove, concerts with world-class musicians like Udi Bar David of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the La Plume Young Writers Contest.  The conservatory has also provided music scholarships for musically inclined children whose families have limited resources but wish to continue their training.

Brigitte comes from an artistic family, her uncle is the writer Henry Troyat elected member of the French Academy, her mother a noted concert pianist and her father created the first dance club and restaurant in St. Tropez in the 1950’s. She was named for Brigitte Bardot, who along with Charles Aznavour frequented the family’s home.

Who put the church up to this the hospital who eventually may claim bankruptcy and sell off the land to developers?

Reminds me of those nuns a few years back who sweared that the monstrous Related Group project was what was best for the prime waterfront land.

How about the church deal with religion and leave the sleaze to the developers?

These are the last two Moonlight tours of 2013.

The gardens are spectacular transformed by the glow of a bright Miami moon. With live music in the Courtyard, the allure of Italian-inspired gardens and delicious temptations available for purchase in the Café & Shop, it's no wonder Moonlight Garden Tours are a visitor favorite.

Wednesday night features classical music with Ashley Liberty on violin and Daniel Strange on piano. Thursday features jazz with Jordan Christianson on piano and Matt Flynn on guitar.

Optional guided tours of the gardens begin at 6:30 pm and continue at intervals throughout the evening. 

Tickets $15; $10 for Members, Seniors and Students with ID; available onsite only from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on the evening of the program. The tours are from 6:30  to 9:00 pm both days.

Not all areas of the gardens are wheelchair accessible and decorated rooms will not be open.

One of the relatives, Suzanne Tripp, has purchased the marker for those family members who are there but not listed. The existing large, beautiful tombstone was dedicated about 100 years ago.

The Peacocks had the first Inn in Miami, actually Coconut Grove. Charles and Isabella had a big home and so many visitors wanted to stay with them that they added on to the house and made it an inn. Mrs. Peacock held picnics to raise money for a Sunday School.

The Peacock Inn was across the street for the Coconut Grove Woman's Club, which is still in its same location. The Inn was behind where the Glass House is today in Peacock Park.

One of  the club's committee members, Mona Ball's mother, was a companion to Mrs. Peacock before her marriage to Morgan Gilbert. Mona's mother knew Miami pioneer Julia Tuttle. too!

Other groups around the country did the same thing, including NYC Social, DC Social, Jersey Club Sports, Stay & Play Sports & Social, Delaware Sports Leagues,SportsLink, Underdog Seattle & Atlanta Sports & Social Club.

The 5K run was held in honor of all those affected by the horrific tragedy at the Boston Marathon. The course started at Florida Running Company and made its way through the Grove, it included the running trails at Kennedy Park.  

Afterwards, everyone gathered at the Sandbar.

All of the proceeds were donated to the One Fund Boston.
